Here is a method for learning to recognize phrases, and keep them strong in passive recognition (reading) that I have found.

Get a book like "Nathanna Cainte"

Turn it upside down

Find a head word (in bold letters)

Read it an recognize it in both languages from short term memory

Pick one of the entries that follows from it and try to read it out till you can say the sentence in both languages

Write it in Irish on a page

Turn book right side up and check is phrase and spelling right

Do 3/4 at a time. Periodically check and peruse page. If one does not recognize the phrase, check one word in dictionary first, before the whole phrase.

This seems to build up a passive store of phrases. Maybe it is useful due to making you work to figure out the message.
