I came across the following in 'Bun-Ghaeilge' -

"Na sean-seirbhísigh an pháláis, bhí siad go híontach."

I thought two definite articles weren't to be used together in this manner, or does it not apply if one is plural?

Looks like a mistake... You don't need the "na".

Seconded. Either that, or some other words are missing before an pháláis.

e.g. Na sean-seirbhísigh i bhfoireann an pháláis, bhí siad go híontach

quote:

Na sean-seirbhísigh an pháláis

Faightear abairtí mar sin ó am ham i Sean-Ghaeilge agus i Meán-Ghaeilge. Níl siad coitianta, ach is díol spéise go bhfuil siad ann ar chor ar bith. Ní faoi anáil an Bhéarla a scríobhadh iad.

"An seanchas gearr,
an seanchas is fearr."

... Ní faoi anáil an Bhéarla a scríobhadh iad.

Is fíor sin. Bíonn an dá alt le clos anois is arís ag na cainteoirí Gaeilge is fearr. In Iorras Domhnann. Tá roinnt leaganacha le clos ar sheantéip John hInnéirghe, scéalta Chois Cladaigh.

Bíonn siad le clos go fíorannamh arís ag na cainteoirí is measa, an lucht foghlama nach bhfuil i bhfad i mbun oibre. As an mBéarla a thógfadh an dream seo iad ar ndóigh.

Is aisteach le rá, ní bhíonn an dá alt le clos ag an gcuid is mó de ghnáthchainteoirí Gaeilge atá idir an dá dhream eile sin thuas.
