Má théann tú go www.csis.ul.ie/focloir agus "fada" a chur isteach ann; léireoidh sé dhuit iomlán a fhoirmeacha.

An focal is faide sa teanga atá ó Gharda, mura bhfuil dul amú orm, ní foirmeacha an fhocail "fada". Is cuimhin liom go raibh díospóireacht faoi seo ar cheann de na liostaí Gaeilge cúpla bliain ó shin. Hmmm.... fan go bhfeice mé....

"An seanchas gearr,
an seanchas is fearr."

OK, cuireadh an cheist ar Ghaelic-L thiar sa bhliain 1993 agus seo é an freagra a tugadh ag an am sin:

lámhscríbhneoireacht

Ach is rí-dhócha go bhfuil ceann níos faide ná sin againn!

"An seanchas gearr,
an seanchas is fearr."

I am curious...

I didn't know words could be that long in Irish. Is this actually one word, or a compounded word like they do in German?

I have never seen this done before, What do the words given by Dennis and Abigail mean?

You can do it in theory Do Chinniúint but it's not very common to have more than two prefixes on a noun.
They mean 'A very bad ex-lieutenant-commander' and 'A false, bad ex-lieutenant-commander'.

There should be a fleiscín after the first prefix on both, dar liom.

Mo leithscéal, ar ndóigh, the words are in the plural.

Cad é bhur mbarúil faoin fhleiscín ag tús an fhocail?

Interesting, learn something new every day.

When might something like this happen? Is there a specific reason for adding all the prefixes instead of writing out the adjectives?

Is tábhachtach an réimír neamh- más focal fada atá uait! Seo ceann eile as FGB atá litir amháin níos faide, más maith mo chomhaireamh:

neamhchoinbhinsiúnaí
neamhchorrabhuaiseach = nonchalant, self-possessed, unperturbed

"An seanchas gearr,
an seanchas is fearr."

An focal is faide dá bhfuil sa bhunachar téarmaíochta focal.ie ná:

déchlóraidéfheiniltríchlóireatán

Tá 32 carachtar ann. Is é an Béarla atá air ná dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, nó DDT mar is fearr aithne air.
