Hi!

I'm looking for a rather extensive wordlist in Modern Irish, with quite a lot of words. Just like a dictionary, but only with the Irish entries if possible. I've not been able to find one on the web so far (actually I have, but too many common words were lacking).

It sounds like you need the tools of corpus linguistics -tell me, does your course do much on it? I want to go to Lancaster as they are strong on that; I think UCL is more for phonetics and pragmatics

Which course are you talking about? I don't do any course anymore: I achieved my Ph.D. last month.

I don't want to work on corpus linguistics, actually, I want to make a dictionary.

For my list, I have asked to An Gúm this afternoon, to know where I could find such a list (maybe they can send one to me). I'll ask to Caoimhín too, thanks Aonghus.

It is a 127 page Irish German German Irish dictionary. The Irish German part is 64 pages long. Aonghus may be interested too. It is PDF, but if you have a copy of Adobe you can converrt it to word, and then use the list.

http://www.yorku.ca/inpar/language/IrishFlashCards.pdf is a PDF of 4500 Irish words as flashcards. I think it is password protected, so difficult to manipulate. YOu could email the author...

Thanks for your link, Josh. I guess there aren’t enough words ("teacht" isn’t in it !), but I can begin with that. How can I convert it to Word? Even with Adobe I dunno how you do that...

I'm ahem, digitizing one myself. I've dissected one (can't say, still under copyright) and it will cost a good bit in transcription to type (not doing it myself!). Once it is done (thematic and morpheme dictionary) I want to fill in examples from a corpus, so that it can be put on net, and not break any copyright. I'm looking into the sort of mark-up language I will need now.

I can't manage to open the ispell file (gaeilge.raw)... TO open it I need a software, so I've downloaded one, but I can't manage to open it itself...

In a similar vein, is there a frequency list of Irish words with English equivalents? I ask because one of the most useful books I've ever come across is Oxford's "10,000 German Words."

you could email Kevin Scannell at the above sites and he can give you a list of up to 150,000 words based on frequency. You can then order them by alphabet in a word processing program
