Well, I figure people come here all the time for tattoo translations, etc., so... in a similar vein...
I'm in the process of forming my own company, and any company needs a name.
Rather than simply be "Domhnall Ó hAireachtaigh LLC," I'd like to use a for-real Irish word. I had one in mind ("Réalta," for "star"), but alas some wretch has already taken it, curse him. Where's the luck of the Irish when you need it? Honestly.
Anyway, the key attributes of such a name would be:
* It must be unintimidating for a non-Irish-speaker to pronounce;
* It can't have any unfortunate secondary meanings in Irish;
* It can't sound like something undesirable in English;
... etc.
Any suggestions? Fire away...

Does LLC stand for some kind of a lawyer (pardon my ignorance)?
How about
Dlí (Law)
A bit more information about the company type/area of business would help pick a good word. |

Oops. Is see that LLC is just what we on this side of the pond call a Limited company (abbreviated Ltd in English or Teo. (for teoranta in Irish).
So, breis eolais, a Dhomhnaill, maith a' fear! |

What about FIOS
It is easy to pronounce, it has a direct English translation - KNOWLEDGE
and it can work as a bilingual anagram e.g.
Foresight Intelligience Overview Strategy
or as gailge
Faisneis Intinn Oiliuint Strateis |

I've seen quite a few companies with Irish words spelt as if they were english e.g. Shinawil productions instead of Sin a bhfuil...

Well, I picked a name!
You would think that picking an Irish word as a company name would be easy, but NO.
Fios was taken! Can you believe it? So were a good many others.
But, I finally settled upon Deilf. It's generally pronouncable in English (although I'll end up just saying "delf" anyway, for customer ease). Plus it lends itself to a nice friendly graphic / mascot.
Now I need to find somebody who can come up with a logo for me! |
