I was wondering if someone can help me with this word... I came across it on the web where a person defined it as meaning "beagle." My little green Collin's Gem Irish Dictionary 2nd Edition 2006 gives: Gadhar nm 1 dog (p 481) I am familiar with "madra = dog" and "cú = hound"...so is this just another word for "dog" or is this actually the name for the beagle, a specific breed of dog? |

"Gadhar" is a general word for "dog" in Munster and parts of Connemara - elsewhere, as Josh says, it's a specialized term for a hunting dog. Nothing so specific as a beagle though. Tá fáilte roimh chuile cheartú!
