I bet everyone in Ireland knows Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill, given what they say about her in the little booklet I am just reading . They say she is one of the finest traditional singers in Ireland. I just bought one of her records. Really beautiful songs. But I would have liked to know what kind of gaeilge it was: Is it Connemara or Munster ? Could anybody tell me? |

Neither! She has an Ulster background. But with Conamara influences since she spent a lot of time in RathCairn, which is in county Meath, but was seeded from Conamara in the 1930s |

Yeah, that Ó Domhnaill family is from Rann na Feirste, in northwestern Donegal (it’s related to the famous writers Séamas Ó Grianna, I think). And as Aonghus said, a part of the Ó Domhnaill family was one of those who went to settle down in Meath Gaeltacht. I don’t see Connemara influences in her Irish. Why do you say that? I think her Irish is purely Rann na Feirste one. Learn Irish pronunciation here: www.phouka.com/gaelic/sounds/sounds.htm & http://fsii.gaeilge.org/
