How are these actually pronounced as they are shortened as this would help for listening . I know an odd on, and some of them might be used in ways not as simple as listed below (ar nós -->ar mo nós = like me with possessive pronoun dropped into them). But as they are, I'd like to know. I don't need IPA, only a spelling as they would be, ex: de réir --> léir ar aghaidh ar ceann ar chúl ar feadh ar fud ar nós ar s(h)on as ucht d'ainneoin de bharr de chois de réir |

Where do they say "de réir" -> "léir"? I'm not sure I've ever heard that (or maybe I have and just didn't notice - mentally I tend to decode all speech into more-or-less standard written form and store it that way.) ar aghaidh: "aidh" not pronounced, result is that "aghaidh" sounds like the "adh" in "fadhb" ar feadh: "dh" not pronounced, result is that "feadh" sounds like the "fea" in "feadaíl" The rest sound more or less like they're spelled. The "ar" might be omitted in some cases, so don't count on it being there. d'ainneoin: "d" pronounced as "dh" or as "g" de bharr: ditto, can sound like "go bharr" but of course "go" wouldn't lenite de chois: Don't know. Usually I'd just say "cois" de réir: "dh'réir" or "g'réir" or thereabouts (broad "dh"/"g" though) Tá fáilte roimh chuile cheartú!

Aibí, you should mention that what you're saying here applies for Connemara Irish, not elsewhere. For example, that's how we'd pronounce these prepositions in NW Donegal (Gaoth Dobhair): ar aghaidh = ɛɼ ˈeːi ar ceann = ɛɼ ˈcɔn̪ˠ ar chúl = ɛɾ ˈχuːlˠ ar feadh = ɛɼ ˈɸaw ar fud = ɛɾ ˈɸʷʌd̪ˠ ar nós = ɛr ˈn̪ˠoːsˠ ar s(h)on = ɛɾ ˈsˠɔnˠ/hɔnˠ as ucht = ɪsˠ ˈʌɾ̥t̪ˠ d'ainneoin = (d̪ˠ) ˈaɲɔn (not 100% sure) de bharr = d̪ˠɔ ˈwæːr de chois = (ə) ˈχɔʃ de réir = d̪ˠə ˈɾeːj Learn Irish pronunciation here: www.phouka.com/gaelic/sounds/sounds.htm & http://fsii.gaeilge.org/

As for léir, it applies to Mayo irish, too, but the texts I have dont use them very often, as it happens. Some of them are reduced in Muster Irish too I think. I have seen 'behind' as just 'chúl' along -I say it on a housing development, and thought it was wrong, but it seems it can be used as a shortened 'ar chúl'. Thanks for the answers. Given that the prepositions are pronounced, there is no point in posting all the others I have, as that would be redundant. I'll look for the Connacht form in literature then. Unless any Connnacht experts know them, please fill me in! |
