What means I live, I search, I burn in irish? And how do you write it? Thank you for an answer. |

Maybe something longer? There is still more place on your back to accomodate lengthy tatoo... What about - "Oh, almighty Deess Daghdha, when thou seest from the heavenly abyss in the darkness of light upon the piece of otherwordly clay I live, I search, I burn in Irish". What about that? You like it? Wait for someone to translate! (Message edited by Róman on September 19, 2007) Gaelainn na Mumhan abú!

'Fraid that's a bit beyond my capabilities this time of night. For the shorter version, I'd suggest "Mairim, cuardaím, dóim." Tá fáilte roimh chuile cheartú!

Abigail, that silly tatoo aside - the verb "cuardaigh" is what I want to discuss. I was under impression it is not exactly like English "search", at least not always. Isn't "faigh" used very often when you would expect "cuardaigh"? Gaelainn na Mumhan abú!

MT, despite the disclaimer, Abigails version is fine.
Róman Ní dóigh liom é. Gníomh leanúnach atá i gceist le cuardach; gníomh aon uaire le fáil. "lorg" an t-aon malairt fhocal a ritheann liom ar cuardach.
fáil [ainm briathartha][ainmfhocal baininscneach den tríú díochlaonadh] sealbhú, aimsiú (faigh do chóta agus bí liom); gnóthú (gheobhaidh sé an lámh uachtair ort); soláthar (fuair mé an dochtúir dó); dul trí fulaingt (má fhaighim scanradh; fuair sí bás; náire a fháil); teacht ar (fuair sí airgead caillte); éirí (bhí an oíche ag fáil dorcha); teacht ar fhios nó ar eolas (fuair mé amach nach é a rinne é); bheith ábalta (ní bhfaighinn a leithéid a rá leat); soláthar, sroicheadh (níl fáil ar a leithéid; níl sé ar fáil, le fáil, go héasca). cuardach [ainm briathartha][ainmfhocal firinscneach den chéad díochlaonadh] lorg ruda ar fud áite; lorg ruda ar phearsa nó i seilbh duine. |

I'm having trouble thinking of any examples where "faigh" (find, get, obtain) and "cuardaigh" (search, seek) would overlap. Maybe you're thinking "faigh" vs. "aimsigh" (find, locate)? It's true that "cuartaigh" isn't exactly like English "search", but to me that's because it can also mean "look for" or "seek": Chuartaigh siad teach Sheáin - They looked for Seán's house Chuartaigh siad teach Sheáin - They searched Seán's house Tá fáilte roimh chuile cheartú!

MT, I think the missing quotation marks confused Róman (and me) "I live, I search, I burn" in Irish is what you meant, but we read "I live, I search, I burn in Irish" - which is corny. |

O.K, this is absolutly corny and NEEDS an ironic comment. Sorry, my fault. I´m learning both langages at the moment. Perhaps next time I´ve got someting useful to post. By then thanks! |

You yourself are not corny and your post wasn't corny either, you just wanted to know and they misunderstood you. No harm in that, or at least there shouldn't be. Beir bua agus beannacht |

Apologies, MT. I did not intend to imply that you were being corny; nor was I trying to excuse Róman's comment which I disagree with. I was trying to explain why he might have misunderstood your first post, as I also did. |
