To use the example from elsewhere...
Tá an fear, atá i gcarr Sheáin, ard.
I understand that "atá," written as one word, is really two words: a + tá.
Is this unification of the relative pronoun with its verb done with all verbs, or only in the case of atá? |

As far as I know, you only do that with "tá" and sometimes "deir" and "dúirt". Never seen that with other verbs so far.

"Atá" is an older form of tá, now generally shortened to "tá". ("A-" was an old preverb [at-tá > atá].)
One Exception:
If the relative particle "a" would be used: a + (a)tá = atá.
So modern direct relative "atá" is rather old "atá" and the direct relative particle is omitted.
Deir once was "adeir", dúirt once was "adúirt". And so it is relative "a deir" and "a dúirt" without leniton and in older orthography written "adeir" and "adúirt" resp. (akin to "atá").
