"I never heard what happened to him after that."
Níor chuala mé céard a tharla dó ina dhiaidh sin.

"I never did hear what happened to him after that."
???

Cén chaoi a gcuirfeá an sórt seo béime ar bhriathar? Tá's agam go raibh plé againn ar a leithéid seo de cheist tamall ó shin, ach nílim cinnte an é seo an rud céanna go beacht:

Is é an chaoi gur chuala mé é
I didn't hear it (i.e. I read it in the newspaper instead?)

níor chuala mé, tar éis an tsaoil, céard a tharla dó ina dhiaidh sin.

agus

níor chualas-sa é (is amhlaidh do léigheas sa nuachtán é).

Dar liomsa a Aibigail, is ionann an dá habairt a luaigh tú, cé go bhfuil fuaim beagán níos ardnósach ag an ndara ceann.

As for placing emphasis on a verb, let's take an English example first:

It wasn't that he saw the man break into the house, but rather that he heard him.

Here'e my attempt at translation:

Ní hé an cás go bhfaca sé an fear ag briseadh isteach ar an tigh, seachas é a chloisteáil.

Muna mbíonn téarma Gaoluinne agaibh ar rud éigin, bígí cruthaitheach! Ná téigí i muinín focail Bhéarla a úsáid, údar truaillithe é sin dod chuid cainte.
