I am trying to say: I think x should be y. The existential paradigm conjugation is what I'm looking for in this specific case. Thanks a lot |

Is Y a noun, an adjective, a kangaroo? I think Róisín should be happy / Ceapaim gur ceart áthas a bheith ar Róisín I think Séamas should be helping / Ceapaim gur ceart do Sheámas bheith ag cabhrú I think Domhnall should be a doctor / Ceapaim gur ceart do Dhomhnall bheith ina dhoctúir I think Máirtín should be strong / Ceapaim gur ceart do Mháirtín bheith láidir (Message edited by fear_na_mbróg on July 08, 2007) -- Fáilte Roimh Cheartú -- Muna mbíonn téarma Gaoluinne agaibh ar rud éigin, bígí cruthaitheach! Ná téigí i muinín focail Bhéarla a úsáid, údar truaillithe é sin dod chuid cainte.

Thanks Lughaidh, both x and y are nouns, like in the sentence: television can not, presumably, be means of education. |

A Lughaidh, bhfuil tú ag rá gur c(h)eart an modh cionnaíollach a úsáid nuair a bhítear ag rá "should" as Gaoluinn? i.e. "Ba cheart duit" in ionad "Is ceart duit"? -- Fáilte Roimh Cheartú -- Muna mbíonn téarma Gaoluinne agaibh ar rud éigin, bígí cruthaitheach! quote:Chuala mé i gcónaí an leagan sin sa módh coinníollach As I have seen it in two textbooks by Munster natives as "is ceart dom", tá amhras orm that you have seen Béarlachas i gcomhnaí. I should (conditional) -> Ba cheart dom (conditional). Irish has normal present tense in such expression and there tons of them: is maith liom is breá liom is ail liom is dóigh liom is fiú dom is ceart dom .... Gaelainn na Mumhan abú!
