http://www.gaelport.com/index.php?page=clippings&id=2073&viewby=date quote:While I have met immigrants who are interested in learning Irish despite it being apparent to them 'that many Irish people do not speak Irish', the more Irish is spoken and its usage developed within society, the more immigrants will be interested in learning it. By far the biggest threat to Irish therefore is many Irish people's complete indifference and closed-mind to the language. |

Aye cinnte dearfach.. Ceist bheag.. Cad as do mo dhuine? Cill Mhaighneann ? A people without a language of its own is only half a nation.A nation should guard its language more than its territories, 'tis a surer barrier and a more important frontier than mountain or river

Bhuel sin ceart go leor, deas is mar sin de ach níl sé ag tabhairt freagra don chéad litir ó Dr David Barnwell as Roinn na Spáinnise in Ollscoil na hÉireann Maigh Nuad. An bhfuil sé anois? Níl ann ach an gnáth freagra dearfach ó Ariel i ndáiríre. Seo thíos an litir a bhí mar fhreagra don ráiteas ag Éamó http://www.gaelport.com/index.php?page=clippings&id=2065&viewby=date "In a lifetime of studying language and linguistics I have yet to see a case where an already debilitate minority language is reinvigorated by the coming of throngs of users of other languages. Ireland shows no exception to the rule that strong languages overrun weak languages. Just a decade ago Irish was the second most commonly spoken language in this country. Today it has been supplanted by Polish. Nor is Irish now in third position, nor in fourth, not even in fifth." ........ "But please Mr O'Cuiv, don't insult our intelligence by claiming that the arrival of hundreds of thousands of speakers of Polish, Chinese etc. is somehow going to aid our ailing ancestral tongue." Baintear úsáid as "mo dhuine" an t-am AR FAD ó thuaidh.. Caithfidh nach ndéanann sé ciall uaireanta! Agus pé scéal, d'fhéadfadh le "mo dhuine" bheith ag tagairt d'fhear, do bhean nó do slua daoine... do bhean = yer wan your wife! Ní fíor duit. Is féidir seanduine a rá le duine de ceachtar cineál. duine [ainmfhocal firinscneach den cheathrú díochlaonadh] aon den chine daonna, fear nó bean; neach ar bith (dá mbeadh deifir ar dhuine). seanduine [ainmfhocal firinscneach den cheathrú díochlaonadh] duine aosta; duine críonna; seanaois. |

sea tá fhios agam, ach sa ghnáthchaint ní bhíonn seanduine úsáidte ach le haghaidh na seanboic, nó a'bhfuil dhul amú orm |
