A chairde, I'm doing some research on film and television representations of Irish speakers who are not ethnically Irish. "Yu Ming is Ainm Dom" might be the most obvious example (a short film about a young Chinese man who learns Irish). I'm trying to look for any representations of non-ethnically-Irish Irish speakers--Asian, African, European, American, anything. I've done a lot of google searching but so far have had very little luck. Can any of you think of examples of this? Go raibh maith agaibh as an cabhair! |

There was an Irish born actor of african origin in Ros Na Rún a few years ago. The characters name was Ciarán, I think. And I think some episodes of C.U. Burn had Irish speaking European tourists. |

Charlotte a chara, There was a wee programme on the old Raidió teilifís éireann not so long ago with foreigners who came to ireland and learned irish if my memory serves me correctly! A people without a language of its own is only half a nation.A nation should guard its language more than its territories, 'tis a surer barrier and a more important frontier than mountain or river

wasn't there an old Hollywood film where Barry Fitzgerald played an African guide who spoke to the "natives" in Irish and they responded as gaeilge (of course the viwer was supposed to believe it was an African language) |

A Riona I'm not at all certain, but it might be "Tarzan's Secret Treasure (1941)" staring Johnny Weissmuller |

Wow, cheers, everyone--I vaguely remembered the character from Ros na Rún (but not his name), but the rest is news to me. I'm going to have to try to track down "Tarzan's Secret Treasure"! I really appreciate the help; I spent quite a bit of time doing google searching and didn't manage to come up with any of this--you are all a brilliant resource. Go raibh míle maith agaibh! |
