All of you have been a tremendous help in the past and am in need of your expertise and erudition, as I have neither in this field. I'm exhausted from hours of searching on the web in search of a few ideas or answers and would like some assistance if you can afford the time. Could you please tell me how the following names are pronounced? 1. Inghean 2. Kyla 3. Niamh 4. Nighean 5. Sileas 6. Diarmid 7. Edme 8. Cadha My wife and I have given our three children Scottish and Irish names and are looking to continue the tradition with our fourth. Thank you, Thank you! |

Inghean -> IN-yann Kyla -> as in English, since it's an Anglicized form Niamh -> NYEE-uhw Nighean -> NYEE-un Sìleas -> SHEE-luss Diarmaid -> JEE-uh-ruh-mwij Edme -> it's not Modern Irish, so I dunno Cadha -> KAY (with a long "ay" sound) Diarmaid is the only boy name in the list, I dunno if you did it on purpose. I've only ever heard "Niamh" pronounced as "Neev". -- Fáilte Roimh Cheartú -- Mura mbíonn téarma Gaeilge agaibh ar rud éigin, bígí cruthaitheach! Ná téigí i muinín focail Bhéarla a úsáid, údar truaillithe é sin dod chuid cainte.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to log-in, but I'll give it a try. Two of my sons wives will be having babies in the near future. Since I am so very proud of my Irish heritage, I would like to have my grandchildren call me the Irish name for Grandmother, as well as my husband - the Irish name for Grandfather. Is anyone able to help us? Thank you so very much. |

I have a daughter named Niamh and we pronounce it "NEE-uv". From my experience, it would be the common prononuciation, amongst English speakers at any rate. My daughter spent 15 months in Australia, and the Aussie had great fun trying to pronunce it! |
