Several Irish speakers from throughout Ireland (and not just Ulster) have told me that they pronounce the "á" in "meán" as they pronounce the "a" in "bean" (woman) whereas I have seen in phonetic dictionaries that "meán" rhymes with the "á" sound in "slán". Which is it?

Go raibh maith agaibh do do fhreagra.

Now that you mention it, that's what I hear from friends here in Seattle who were raised in Cork and Dublin.

"An seanchas gearr,
an seanchas is fearr."

If it's worth anything, I've never heard "meán" pronunced with anything other than a flat A sound.

In Conamara you might hear "M-yawn"

A people without a language of its own is only half a nation.A nation should guard its language more than its territories, 'tis a surer barrier and a more important frontier than mountain or river

Well, according to my friend who is a native speaker from Múscraí (in county Cork), "meán" rhymes with "bean" (woman) - in Múscraí anyway.

In Ulster, meán [m´æːnˠ]; bean [b´anˠ]; slán [slˠæːnˠ]
