Dia Duit. Kim is ainm dom. Tá mé I mo chónaí I Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. Níl agam ach beagáinín Gaeilge. Is dalta mé (nua? úr?).

Conas a dear fá grandparents as Gaeilge?

Well, my maternal great grandparents were from Galway, and homesteaded in the Midwest. They were the O'Naughtons. My paternal side is most likely from around the cork area, but the Moore family immigrated some time ago. My mathaír and grandmother have taught me to never forget my heritage, so I would love to become fluent and pass this on.

Go raibh maith agat, in advance to all of you who are willing to help me!
I study anthropology and linguistics, so my questions should not be too dullard! :)

Buíochas,
kim

Dia is Muire duit, a Kimberly!

Grandmother: Seanmháthair, or Máthair Mhór

Grandfather: Seanathair, or Athair Mór

Granny: Mamó

Grandad: Daideo

I've not seen an inclusive word for "grandparents," but perhaps "seanthuismitheoirí" is in the ballpark. Wait for more input on that.

If you mean "I am a new pupil," you want "Is dalta nua mé"

Fáilte go dtí an fóram seo, a Kimberly. Is Meiriceánach mé fosta. Tá mé i mo chónaí i gCalifornia, SAM (in aice le Santa Cruz).

Grandparents - Seanthuistí

Is Dalta nua mé... Is Dalta nua le Gaeilge mé.
I am a new student... I am a new student of Irish.

A people without a language of its own is only half a nation.A nation should guard its language more than its territories, 'tis a surer barrier and a more important frontier than mountain or river

Seantuismitheoirí and seantuistí: you can’t have -n + th- in a compound word, the t remains t.

Dia is Muire dhuit, a Kim!

Is ó New Mexico mé (Nua Mheicsiceo, an ea?). Tá cónaí orm anseo (i n-Alburquerque) agus táim ag foghlaim na Gaelainn, chomh maith.

Dála an sceil, "The Wind That Shakes The Barley" is showing at the Guild Theater to-day at 3:30, 6:00, and 8:30 p.m. It will be showing from now until May 3rd. Just letting ya know in case you haven't heard about it, yet. Also, there will be a Celtic Festival in Alburquerque, at Balloon Fiesta Park, on May 19th. I don't know if you've ever been to the one in town, but thousands of people go there every year, and there is always good music, food, etc.

Hope to see ya around, a chara!

p.s. Oh, by the way, me and my girlfriend live by the University and we would be very happy to converse and study Gaelic with you whenever you want.

Kim, a chara,

Fáilte romhat.

Is dalta nua thú? Go han-mhaith!

Regarding your sentence about not having but a little Irish,
I'd say "Níl ach beagán Gaeilge agam."

Have you heard about Gaeltalk.net?
They do online tutoring for beginning students (other levels as well).
They're reasonable and have a great reputation.

Le meas,
Paul

a Nua Mheicsiceo wee falorie man, a chara,

I am glad to know that there are some irish speakers in Burque! I will try to make it to the Guild tonight at 8:30pm. I would love to have some people to practice with! I also live by the university, and I hope to to see you around.
I have not lived in Albuquerque long, but I will be leaving the country for India in May. So, unfortunately I will not be around for the festival.

Beir bua agus beannact,
Kim

I am going to the 8:30 show to-night at the Guild. If you want to set up a time for us to get together and practice Irish, I will be helping out some friends at the "Irish Freedom" table from 7:45 until the movie starts at 8:30.

Le gach deagh ghuí,
WFM
