Did Aonghus give up daltai.com discussion for Lent?! *lol* I was wondering where he was.

Well, I suppose it's a compliment, as you're supposed to give up something you enjoy! :)

Tá féasóg aige. An Mahamadach é?

Sainigh "diócáil" as Béarla más é do thoil.

Go raibh maith agat.

jokáil. Cumann BRN a theanga fhéin ó am go chéile.

Chaith mé an tseachtain seo i bhfad ó ríomhairí i dTír Chonaill.

Chaith mé spléachadh isteach anseo Domhnach Cásca, ach bhí mé imithe ó shin.

A Phádraig, mar is eol duit, is Caitliceach Rómhánach an féasógaí seo.

Uabhar?

Ní duine uaibhreach mé, tá súil agam! Ach ní raibh olc ná fearg orm.

Ní gá léithscéal, tuigim go raibh magadh i gceist

Ah. Ní raibh an brí sin agam. GRMA, a Phádraig!

uabhar [ainmfhocal firinscneach den chéad díochlaonadh]
toirtéis, sotal, gortú de dheasca tarcaisne nó díomá (uabhar goil); teaspach; pocléimneach (gamhna, uain, ag uabhar); fás borb, slamás; faitíos cumha.

Focal breá ilbhríoch. Ní raibh ach an príomhbhrí agamsa.

Cad é an difríocht idir uabhar agus olc?

Mar sampla:

thainig uabhar ort in éadan thainig olc ort?

Ni thogair mé a rá go bhfuil uabhar ort.

Níl fhios agam, ó tharla nach raibh an brí sin agam.

Ceadóidh mé "TOBAR NA GAEDHILGE" anocht chun samplaí a lorg.

Aha! Is an focal MASLA é. Bhí mé ag brath a rá, "tá súil agam go ní raibh masla (díom) ort."

Ar chuma eile: "thainig (mo) uabhar ort = as Béarla:

I hope my arrogance did not come upon you. (With further apologies for literal translation a la rising roads.)

Tá súil agam nár mhaslaigh mé tú./nár ghlac tú masla as an méid a dúirt mé.

Níor mhaslaigh.

Your use of "uabhar" in the meaning of "take offence at" is almost certainly correct; I just didn't recognise it since I have never seen it used that way.

Tá sé sa bhfoclóir, ceart go leor, thug mé sleacht ón bhFoclóir Bheag thuas.

Ach ba mhaith liom é fheiscint i gcomhthéacs.

Bhí súil agam gheobhainn i gcomhthéacs bíobala ár frása. Ní fuair mé áit ar bith an frása le uabhar, ach fuair mé "cliseann air:" MATHA 13:21 in an Bíobla Maigh Nuad. Go minic feicimid "ghlac siad scannal." As Béarla, (Rí Seamus) "they were offended."

Ní maith é an duine a bheith leis féin.

Tá "ghlac siad scannal" níos laidre, sílim.

(They were scandalised i mBéarla ar lae inniu)
