I wanted to say grody, discusting, nasty, grose or yucky i nGaeilge but Focloir Poca has none of these words so I can't. Which makes me wonder why there are a meriod of words in English listed that I've never heard in my life and yet they don't have a simple word like discusting. Beir bua agus beannacht |

Díol spéise trácht Ríona. Tuige nach bhfuil foclóir Gaeilge/ Béarla Meiriceánach ann, seachas Béarla Eorpach? |

Mar nach ndíolfaí ach cúpla míle cóip de, b'fhéidir? Ach tá ann, ar bhealach, sa bhfoclóir "Collins Gem". Is fíor go bhfuil na litrithe Eorpacha in uachtar ann ("color" liostaithe ach mar mhalairt ar "colour", cuir i gcás) ach tá roinnt mhaith focla Meiriceánacha le fáil ann freisin: "apartment," "sidewalk," "trash can" agus araile. Tá fáilte roimh chuile cheartú!

Bhal, ní raibh raibh ag smaoineamh ar dhíolachán leabhair ach, b'fhéidir, suíomh idirlín, ina bhféadfadh Meiciceánaigh cur leis de réir mar a airíonn siad easnaimh sna foclóirí Béarla Eorpaigh. M. sh. mar Eorpach, as na focail seo"grody, discusting, nasty, grose or yucky " thuigfinn trí cinn go líofa, thuigfinn focal mar fhocal Meiriceánach agus focal eile nár chuala mé riamh: grogy. Is maith liom é |

Bhuel, is Meiriceánach ó dhúchas mise agus níor chuala mé "grody" ach oiread. B'fhéidir gur focal canúnach é.... Tá fáilte roimh chuile cheartú!

quote:níor chuala mé "grody" ach oiread Bhíodh sé san fhaisean ar an gcósta thiar 10-15 bliana ó shin, ach is fada ó chuala mise é. Is cosúil gur leagan malartach de "grotty" atá ann. "An seanchas gearr, an seanchas is fearr."

Oh dear. That has got to be on the list of most embarassing mistakes I've ever made on Daltai. I don't know what in tarnation I was thinking "discusting" indeed. Sure and I always seem to be doing the most foolish-witted things. :( As to saying grody, I just use a perculiar mixture in my vocabulary and I don't allow age designations to effect my options of words, except in the obvious circumstances. :) Beir bua agus beannacht |

Riona, I've been reading posts here for years but this one caught my eye. I had to smile when I saw the word “grotty”. I haven’t heard that in almost 40 years. Growing up in Ireland during the 60s, we were often exposed to British slang via the telly and radio. And this was a popular expression among teens. I checked the Merriam – Webster Dictionary and sure enough it is listed. Grotty Pronunciation: \’grä-tē\ Function: adjective Inflected Form(s): grot·ti·er; -est Etymology: origin unknown Date: 1964 chiefly British : wretchedly shabby : of poor quality; filthy, gross GRMA for a stroll down memory lane. ;) |

A chara, Sure and I didn't know it was British. I suppose I learn something new every day. As to yourself, if you've been watching for so very long you should start posting. I always like having new friends on here. :) Beir bua agus beannacht |

There's a scene in the 1964 Beatles' movie "A Hard Day's Night", where George Harrison goes to a television station wher a 'teenie bopper show' is played. It stars a teen-age girl, and is supposed to be the 'new, in, hip" thing. George tells them that the show is a riot - sarcastically. That he and the lads like to turn down the sound and say rude things. And that the girl star is "grotty" - short for grotesque! It's definitely the funniest scene in the film. Johannah, Aithníonn ciaróg, ciaróg eile. Bhínn ag brabhsáil thart ar an suíomh seo le cúpla bliain, cosúil leat fhéin, ach ní bhfuair mé ó mo mhisneach teachtaireacht a dhéanamh. Ach tháinig an misneach dom cúpla seachtain ó shin agus táim fós i mo sheasamh! Johannah, Birds of a feather flock together. I used to surf this site for a few years, like yourself, but I couldn't pluck up the courage to post a message. I got courage a few weeks ago and I'm still standing! |

I don't know how anyone could watch us all posting and not respond. I would go insane with wanting to say things to the all of you. You both clearly have enormous self-control. :) But really posting here is one of the funnest things I do and it won't hurt anyone who is a lurker to try it out. Its fun to have new friends here to write to. Beir bua agus beannacht |

Sure and I saw that scene of that movie today in class when we were talking about music and how the industry is always looking for the next big thing. George accidently walks into the place where that "groty" show is filmed and he talks to the people who work there. How perculiar that I should see that right after it was mentioned here.
