When going through the T's in O'Dónaill for the group project I found this great feminine word: toilfhéith I'm not sure how to translate the compound literally. Maybe 'desire sinew', or 'willing muscle'. Neither of these seems right. |

Tá an focal sin sa teanga le fada an lá. Seo tré as Trecheng Breth Féni, mar shampla: 142. Trí maic beres drús do lonnus: tuilféth, fidchell, dulsaine. http://w3.lincolnu.edu/~focal/docs/triads/triads.html "An seanchas gearr, an seanchas is fearr."

Nílim ag iarraidh bheith drochbhéasach nó aon rud ach nach focal gaeilge do 'penis' atá ann? A people without a language of its own is only half a nation.A nation should guard its language more than its territories, 'tis a surer barrier and a more important frontier than mountain or river

Tá 'penis' sa bhfoclóir, agus táthar ag caint anseo go focleolaíoch. Mar sin is ábhar neodrach é sa chás seo. Ná bíodh imní ort faoi. |

Go raibh maith agat, a Dennis. T 237.31-32 "na hairne toile ocus in toil feith... [Commentary and glosses on texts of Laws] ...airne toile .i. magarrla [O'Davoren's glossary]". Agus A 232.79 "áirne...sloe, fruit of the blackthorn...kernel (of a nut), stone". Ach i bhFoclóir Uí Dhuinnín, feicimse -- "tul-, tuil-, in compounds, prominent or eminent, frontal, mighty, sudden.....tuil-fhéith frontal artery, a frown (Triads)" Agus DIL T 221.82: "toilféith (tol + féith) penis : airne toile fóenan cuma fri toilfeith (.i. bod) O'Davoren 159.....?tri mac beres drús do lonnus: tuilféth Triads 142 (cf also tul compounds)" Agus sa sliocht "tul ...protuberance, projecting part, swelling ...of parts of the body.. forehead..", tá 'toilfheith' i liosta de na comhfhocail ar 275.31 -- "frontal (protuding ?) muscle or sinew 'tulfethi a orcan...tollféthe a mullaich' Táin Bó Cúailgne" [my translation -- protruding muscle of his calf...protrusion of the top of his head] agus "do éirgidar toillféthi a mullaigh go mbátar ar chuing a muiníl Compert Con Culainn" [my translation - the protrusions of the top of his head rose up until they were at the nape of his/its neck] An bhfuil dhá fhocal sainiúil i gceist anseo? "toilfhéith" agus "tuilfhéith" ?? Ceann ón bhfocal 'tol' (will, desire) agus an eile ón bhfocal 'tul' (protuberance)? Is dócha go bhfuil do thuiscintse níos fearr ná mo cheannsa ar an gcás seo. "Trí maic beres drús do lonnus: tuilfhéth, fidchell, dulsaine." Aistriúchán eile: Three sons that desire bears to passion: penis, fidchell, satire. Perhaps the triad refers to men becoming excessively passionate about sex, games, and ridiculing people. Ach níl a fhios agam an bhfuil an t-aistriúchán seo oiriúnach do na triads iad féin. |

quote:I'm not sure how to translate the compound literally. Maybe 'desire sinew', or 'willing muscle'. toil-ḟéiṫ = vein of desire (acc. to Dinneen who does not mention "penis" ...) "Vein" is anatomically and physiologically correct, esp. Corpus cavernosum penis is a vein. Lars (Message edited by lars on February 22, 2007) |
