Is there a difference between these two words? I have seen toit before, but I just came across deatach in a sentence. Are these words interchangable, or is there a specific usage for them? I am not who I think I am, I am not who you think I am, I am who I think you think I am.

quote:Are these words interchangable In general, yes. But there are specific applications where they are not. Seo sampla amháin duit: "toit" can mean "a smoke" (tobacco), while deatach can't, go bhfios domsa. Note that the normal word for "cigarette" is "toitín". An gcaitheann tú tobac? "An seanchas gearr, an seanchas is fearr."

I am not sure if this is correct but I will try... My first thought was "Ní dhéan mé." But I think the correct answer would be "Ní chaitheann mé tobac." The sentence I came across was, "Chonaic mé an deatach." A boy says this about smoke he sees from a chimney. If I wanted to say "the chimney smoke" which would be a better way to go about it. an deatach an tsimléir deatach tsimléir Assuming that I did these correctly the first translates as "smoke of the chinmey" and the second "chimney smoke" correct? a) an deatach an tsimléir b) deatach tsimléir (a) is smoke from a specific chimney; (b) chimney smoke i.e. the type of smoke which issues from chimneys. Ní bhíonn toit gan tine... |

GRMA Aonghus agus Dennis... So using the examples above, would the following be correct? I saw chimney smoke. Chonaic mé deatach simléir. The chimney smoke was blue. Bhí an deatach simléir gorm. I ran because I saw the smoke of the chimney. Rith mé mar chonaic mé deatach an tsimléir. ...or would this be correct... Rith mé mar chonaic mé an deatach an tsimléir. I am not who I think I am, I am not who you think I am, I am who I think you think I am.

Never two articles! deatach an tsimléir | the smoke of the chimney - definite smoke from a definite chimney! |

An cheist: An gcaitheann tú tobac? Do fhreagra: "Ní chaitheann mé tobac." Tá sé sin OK, ach tá Ní chaithim tobac níos fearr. 1st sing. ("I") forms of the present tense are normally inflected: ólaim, ithim, rithim, etc. The great excpetion is tá mé, which is more common than táim. "An seanchas gearr, an seanchas is fearr."

Tá an dá rud ann. Caitear agus óltar tobac, ach is drochnós atá ann pé scéal é! |
