Seo sliocht gairid daoibh, a Shéamais agus James, as an úrscéal ar an raibh sibh ag caint. Scéilín grinn é. Bhí saighdiúirí as Éireann in arm na Fraince ag an am sin, agus saighdiúirí as tíortha eile chomh maith, ina measc siúd an Eilvéis.

Do chuimhnuighios ansain ar an sgéal a insítear fén oifigeach Eilbhéiteach a gcastar taoiseach sluagh air de chuid Maison du Roy. De mo dhóigh ní haon dochar a chur annseo síos. Sibhse, a Éilbhéitigh, ar an taoiseach sluagh Francach, is ar son an airgid a bhíonn sibh ag troid. Muide, ar sé, bíonn muid ag troid ar son na honóra. Sin an dóigh a mbí sé, arsa an tEilbhéisioch. Gach uile dhuine ag troid ar son an ruda nach bhfuil aige.

"An seanchas gearr,
an seanchas is fearr."

Dá mbeadh Mac anseo, d'iarrfainn air an scéilín a aistriú ar mhaithe leis na daoine nach bhfuil sásta nó in ann an seanlitriú a léamh. Ach cá bhfuil sé anois?

an seanchas is fearr."

Scríobh Dennis: Dá mbeadh Mac anseo,

A Dennis, an bhfuil tú ag cainte faoi mise? Caithfidh mé a fheicail na focail thuas, mar caithfidh mé ag dul amach anois.

Fáilte roimh ceartúcháin, go raibh maith agaibh.

Fan bomaite - this translation business was supposed to be for beginners/learners. Of course I'd be glad to give it a try.

Go raibh maith agat as an ceartúchán freisin.

D'athscríobh mé anseo é i litriú an lae inniu, agus rinne mé an rud céanna leis an ngramadach i gcúpla áit. Although this was written in a modern novel, the setting is the mid-18th century, so the author "aged" part of the text accoringly. The exchange here reported is between an aristocratic French office and a Swiss mercenary fighting for the French. (Taoiseach slua is an old term for "army officer", literally "chief of a host/force/army".) Focus on the dialog. That's were the deisbhéalaí is! :-)

Chuimhnigh mé ansin ar an scéal a insítear faoin oifigeach Eilbhéiseach a gcastar taoiseach slua air de chuid Maison du Roy. De mo dhóigh ní [= Is dóigh liom nach] aon dochar [é] a chur anseo síos.

"Sibhse, a Eilbhéisigh," ars an taoiseach slua Francach, "is ar son an airgid a bhíonn sibh ag troid. Muide," ar seisean, "bíonn muid ag troid ar son na honóra.

"Sin an dóigh a mbíonn sé," arsa an tEilbhéiseach. "Gach uile dhuine ag troid ar son an ruda nach bhfuil aige."

Mo iarracht chun Béarla a chur ar an scéal thuas:

I then recalled a story that was told of the Swiss officer who was met by an officer of the French Royal Household.

"You Swiss" said the French officer "fight for the sake of money. As for us" he said "we fight for the sake of honour"

"It is always thus" said the Swiss "everyone fighting for the things that he hasn't got"
