not to be an annoyance, but i'm still trying to wrap my brain around all the forms of the copula and when it is appropriate to use what. is there any way someone "in the know" would be willing to take the standard list above and show what each is, either with examples or straight translation...and any other forms that are not there.

i'd be forever in your debt...

The Copula has two tenses: Present/future and past/conditional. The examples below are of Connemara Irish, with standard Irish in brackets where different. Note the 3rd psn differs from the rest and so is separately noticed. Also note: dochtúr in Connemara, dochtúir in Standard Irish. I might have missed a few lenitions but I think the following is basically right. Dochtúr would resist lenition in Connemara Irish.

PRESENT

1. Positive statement

I am a doctor: Is dochtúr mé.
I am the doctor: Is mé an dochtúr.

He is a doctor: Is dochtúr é.
He is the doctor: Is é an dochtúr é (repeat the pronoun).

2. Negative statement

I am not a doctor: Ní dochtúr mé.
I am not the doctor: Ní mé an dochtúr.

He is not a doctor: Ní dochtúr é.
He is not the doctor: Ní hé an dochtúr é. (prefix h before the pronoun.)

3. Questions

Am I a doctor? Ar dochtúr mé? [STANDARD: an dochtúir mé?]
Am I the doctor? Ar mé an dochtúr? [STANDARD: an mé an dochtúir?]

Is he a doctor? Ar dochtúr é? [STANDARD: an dochtúir é?]
Is he the doctor? Ab é an dochtúr é? [STANDARD: an é an dochtúir é?]

4. Negative questions

Am I not a doctor? Nach dochtúr mé?
Am I not the doctor? Nach mé an dochtúr?

Is he not a doctor? Nach dochtúr é?
Is he not the doctor? Nach é an dochtúr é?

5. Dependent

She says that I am a doctor. Deir sí gur dochtúr mé.
She says that I am the doctor. Deir sí gur mé an dochtúr.

She says that he is a doctor. Deir sí gur dochtúr é.
She says that he is the doctor. Deir sí gurb é an dochtúr é.

6. Negative dependent

She says that I am not a doctor. Deir sí nach dochtúr mé.
She says that I am not the doctor. Deir sí nach mé an dochtúr.

She says that he is not a doctor. Deir sí nach dochtúr é.
She says that he is not the doctor. Deir sí nach é an dochtúr é.

7. If clauses

If I am a doctor… Más dochtúr mé…
If I am the doctor… Más mé an dochtúr…

If he is a doctor… Más dochtúr é…
If he is the doctor.. Más é an dochtúr é…

8. If not clauses

If I am not a doctor… Mara dochtúr mé… [STANDARD: mura dochtúir mé.]
If I am not the doctor… Mara mé an dochtúr… [STANDARD: mura mé an dochtúir.]

If he is not a doctor… Mara dochtúr é… [STANDARD: mura dochtúir é.]
If he is not the doctor… Marab é an dochtúr é… [STANDARD: murab é an dochtúir é.]

NOTE: the present copula can also have future meaning.

PAST

1. Positive statements

I was a doctor. Ba dochtúr mé. [STANDARD: ba dhochtúir mé.]
I was the doctor. Ba mé an dochtúr.

I made a mistake: in the past/conditional, gur takes lenition.

Deir sí gur dochtúir mé - she says I am a doctor

Deir sí gur dhochtúir mé - she says I was a doctor.

Thanks Kieran, will mull that over!

I've been looking into how the copula has changed in order to get a longtitudinal overview, so your list should be most helpful.

If I should find a systematic formula, I will make a PDF. It might or might not be useful to anyone who learns like myself.
