A chairde,

Since it's quite frequent that linguistic terms are used on this forum to discuss the pronunciation of Irish words, I would like to ask for recommendations for online or hard-copy resources for beginners like me who are not familar with terms like "velar fricative." I think that if beginners who have an interest in the technical terms used to describe pronunciation could have a resource available to understand the basic terminilogy, it would be very helpful in learning how to correctly pronounce Irish.

Go raibh maith agaibh.

et al. = et alii = and others (other people)

An giorruchán atá uait nuair atá rudaí i gceist ná "etc."

Bhuel, bfhéidir go ciallionn mé daoine eile! Just kidding a Dennis! Thanks for explaining et al. If I were a "real" member here perhaps I could rename this thread fricatives, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera (Yul Brenner - The King and I)

Sure and I'm taking an intro to linguistics course at my university next term and maybe by the end of it I'll have some vague ideas of what all those linguistic terms mean. :)

A Mhic,
buy yourself a) some dialect books that were created for other linguists, so do their thing with no excuses, and b) use the net to cross reference and find what the terms mean.

When they are broken down, the terms are so very easy, altho, how sounds are operationalised has chnaged over the time irish has been described. Mar shampla, no linguist seems to know what Sweet's vowel system was like, so some books dont make so much sense

A Riona, that's really good to hear you're taking linguistics next term. Go n-éirí an t-adh leat! An bhfuil "major?" agat fós?

Conas dearfa "major" as in major area of study?

A BRN, thanks for the advice.

A Unregistered Guest. What a cool site - thanks! It's exactly what I was looking for. The videos that accompany the definitions are very helpful in understanding fricatives et al umm, etc. (inside joke for Dennis )

A Mhic a chara,

I'm just majoring in Social Sciences, not anything really specialized or overly exciting. I'm just taking the linguistics class for "fun" because I want to know what the all of you are talking about when you say all those linguistic things and because I thought it might be sort of interesting.

In other words, Help, please...

Caitríona? Caitríona s'againne a bhfuil cónaí uirthi i SoCal?

Dála an scéil, a Aonghuis, bí cúramach leis an mbriathar "cláraigh", maith an fear! Seo a bhfuil le rá ag Foclóir na Collaíochta:

cláraigh, br. Leag ar an talamh, craiceann a bhualadh le.

Tá an méid céanna in FGB (Ó Dónaill). Thuig mé a raibh ar intinn agat thuas, ar ndóigh, ach ansin....

Muise, ní chuireann sé ionadh ar bith orm thusa a bheith ag cuir an débhrí ar mo shúile dhom. Tuigim an débhrí, ach ní fhaca mé bealach timpeall air.

Is dócha go mbeadh sé níos feilliunaí

"Cláraigh leis an liosta" a rá...ach tá aithne ag cách anseo ormsa, agus tuigeann siad gur saghas frith Nanny Ogg mé - táimse aonbhríoch, saonta i gconaí!

Tá áthas orm go bhfaca tú an sig seo. Is mithid dom é a athrú, áfach. Dála an scéil, ar chuala tú an t-amhrán riamh? Tá leagan de le Yullinehui (grúpa ó Oaxaca) agam, agus ba bhreá liom an mp3 a chur chugat.
