Have anyone taken https://www.gaeltalk.net courses when you were a beginner? If so, I'm curious what your expectations were and whether their courses met them.

They've a 8 wk beginners course for 50 Euro/$66 that I'm specifically interested in. The work seems largely self-paced, but I suspect you have to tune-in to scheduled Internet broadcasts. Additionally, they seem to have on-line chat style tutoring availible and I'm curious whether you used this feature.

Ah yes, Gaeltalk - I took it last summer. You will learn alot, in a very short time. It was hard to finish all of the lessons in only eight weeks but I (just barely) managed to do it. The best thing about Gaeltalk though, is the on-line tutoring with a native speaker. By the end of the 8 weeks, you will sound pretty much like a native speaker yourself.

They speak in Munster dialect (from Múscraí), so there will be plenty of good books and poetry for you to read when you are done with the lessons. There is also a Yahoo group that is studying the old "Teach Yourself Irish" which teaches the exact same dialect.

Good luck!

Thanks Kevin and Wee Falorie,

Looks like http://www.maths.tcd.ie/gaeilge/ is having a bit of trouble with thier ISP. Ping resolves IP from hostname, and a WHOIS shows their domain name is registered thru next year, but the site won't come up tonight. I'll check again later.

Wee Falorie- I looked at your profile and was wondering if Gaeltalk's on-line tutors were awake in your time zone? I'm on EST (GMT -5hrs) and expect to nudge them 7PM or later my time (12PM+ Irish time). Their website's sample lesson was pretty impressive.

This is just first 8 lessons of Learning Irish. There is nothing wrong with the course, but Gaeltalk provides you with REAL tutors not some pre-recorded dialogues.

I've just read the piece on Old Sayings and Curses and it is riddled with errors some serious ones and it seems that whoever submitted them has not a word of "Gaeilge ina phloic" as we say in Conamara for bluffers who pretend to have knowledege of something when obviously the are speaking out the back ends.
PLEASE for all you beginners DO NOT USE THIS LINK as a source for learning as it is similar to Wikipedia full of inaccurate and misleading contents and should be discarded as "Amateurish and without basis".I don't see any peer review of critique of the material so PLEASE disregard this site content.
Táim ag cur comhairle oraibh go léir fan amach ón suíomh seo mar níl ann ach "CAC Bó" amach is amach .

We had no problem scheduling sessions with the seven hour difference. The tutors are available on both weekends and weekdays so the time difference is no big deal. We usually had our sessions early in the morning before work, which is early afternoon for the folks at Gaeltalk; late mornings would also work nicely on your days off. It was pretty easy to schedule a convenient time because our tutor was not limited to a 9-5 schedule. I can't begin to tell ya what a difference it makes, learning from a native speaker instead of just a book and tapes.

And kudos to MickRua for the heads up on the "Learning Irish" site - maith thú!

Hello! I took Gaeltalk with Wee Falorie Man. I can't say enough in its favor. The lessons are pretty basic; the biggest factor is having your own personal teacher for pronunciation and questions. Also, it is an introduction to the culture of the region. Really anyone who has the chance to, should sign up. Gaeltalk was started with an idea to expand the economy of the Gaeltalk beyond just the "hospitality" business.
