If people like collaboration, how about digitising on of the grammar books, such as the 10mb one? It is 300 pages, so 5 people, 10 pages each a week, equals 6 weeks to compleation. Just a thought.

Great idea! I would like to help, but I don't understand how to digitize. Is this something that is software based? That is, do you transfer the pdf version via a software tool. Or, is it a matter of manually retyping each page?

Also, would the end result be publicly available. I have a Yahoo Group website that I would love to place the final copy.

It would:

a) involve manually retyping
b) agreeing to some standards, such as making 'shew' into modern 'show', or picking ch, gh, th instead of the ponc or vice versa
c) somewhere to keep the files (i.e. someone to email the drafts to)
d) somewhere to host the final PDF

You may be able to do this in conjunction with Project Gutenberg, provided you make the files in their format. You can check their website for more details:

ó, bím anso i gcónaí mar droch-phingin, a Dhennis. But Nicole's the one to see about the Project Gutenberg style of ebooks, having done several herself. I prefer "facsimile" ebooks, such as these few I've done here:

They're not "searchable" like retyped or OCR'd books, but for me the facsimile ebook retains the "character" of the original, which I feel is more valuable than searchability.

BRN -- that's not the case at all. The whole Distributed Proofreaders project is a little more organized/coordinated, but anyone can just pick a separate project to work on. (I've submitted a few, mostly in my area of interest, which is Scandinavian lit in English translation.)

You could ask me questions as well, though having a child put a damper on my volunteer efforts with PG. As I recall, I don't think I did any books in a language other than English (perhaps one in French?) so my experience would probably be of limited help to you.

As usual, I agree with my husband; I do prefer a .pdf to reading a plain text document, especially when you're dealing with old script. If you're keen on doing .pdfs, I would recommend creating bittorrent files as well as putting them up on a yahoogroup.

I hate PDF. Not that it matters in this particular situation. All the best things are always on PDF and I can't read them because my computer won't let me, it irritates me to know end.
