Words have nuances.

There is some good advice in "Gaoth an Fhocail"

First, look up the word in an English Irish Dictionary.
Having chosen an Irish word for your meaning, look that up in an Irish English Dictioany, to confirm that it really means what you think it does.

Pay attention to the meta data - i. a word may have a gloss as being Literary, Historical etc.

Good advice in Irish on translation here

http://www.acmhainn.ie/oideas.htm

quote:

Is é atá in Oideas sraith de cheachtanna aistriúcháin atá bunaithe ar na ceardlanna ‘Ó Bhéarla go Gaeilge’ a reáchtáladh faoi choimirce Fhoras na Gaeilge le linn 2001/2002. Ó mhí go mí, beifear ag cur síos ar ghnéithe den aistriúchán a chothaíonn fadhbanna d’aistritheoirí. Cuirfear ceachtanna agus aistriúcháin shamplacha ar fáil freisin, chun gur féidir le haistritheoirí dul i ngleic leis na fadhbanna éagsúla.

What I myself do is go to englishirishdictionary.com and look at the sample sentences. I wait until I see a suitable usage.

Fáilte Roimh Cheartúcháin
Ceartaigh rud ar bith atá mícheart -- úsáid phrásaí go háirithe.

Googling a word will often give it to you in context too. Not foolproof, but useful none the less.

But be careful with google. There is probably percenatge wise more bad Irish (some of it written by me, monuar) than bad english out there.
