I'm an artist trying to translate "Lust for Life" to Irish. Its an Iggy Pop song if that helps with grammar. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

Hey dude, can we do your laundry for you too? Maybe also cook up your dinner and then clean up afterwards for you, while we're at it? You could at least have posted up the damn lyrics you want translated. Geezus kee-rist. Anyway... my Google-Fu yields the following. If some of you want to tackle this for real, it could be seriously hilarious: IGGY POP LYRICS "Lust For Life" Here comes Johnny Yen again With the liquor and drugs And a flesh machine He's gonna do another strip tease Hey man, where'd you get that lotion? I've been hurting since I bought the gimmick About something called love Yeah, something called love Well, that's like hypnotising chickens Well, I'm just a modern guy Of course, I've had it in the ear before 'Cause of a lust for life 'Cause of a lust for life I'm worth a million in prizes With my torture film Drive a G.T.O. Wear a uniform All on government loan I'm worth a million in prizes Yeah, I'm through with sleeping on the sidewalk No more beating my brains No more beating my brains With the liquor and drugs With the liquor and drugs Well, I'm just a modern guy Of course, I've had it in my ear before 'Cause, of a lust for life (lust for life) 'Cause of a lust for life (lust for life, oooo) I've got a lust for life (oooh) Got a lust for life (oooh) Oh, a lust for life (oooh) Oh, a lust for life (oooh) A lust for life (oooh) I got a lust for life (oooh) Got a lust for life Well, I'm just a modern guy Of course, I've had it in my ear before 'Cause I've a lust for life 'Cause I've a lust for life. Well, here comes Johnny Yen again With the liquor and drugs And a flesh machine I know he's gonna do another strip tease Hey man, where'd ya get that lotion? Your skin starts itching once you buy the gimmick About something called love Oh Love, love, love Well, that's like hypnotising chickens. Well, I'm just a modern guy Of course, I've had it in the ear before And I've a lust for life (lust for life) 'Cause I've a lust for life (lust for life) Got a lust for life Yeah, a lust for life I got a lust for life Oh, a lust for life Got a lust for life Yeah a lust for life I got a lust for life Lust for life [repeat and fade] |

Moderator, could you please delete Domhnall's reply? That isn't the way we react to people politely asking for a simple translation. Manhor92110, don't mind Domhnall, that isn't how we react to polite requests for translations here. Domhnall, cop on. Lust for life = Ainmhian don tSaol I'm not sure which preposition would be most appropriate, (e.g. "ar an", "den") The Caighdeán uses "don Saol", but I think "don tSaol" is more popular. If I'm not mistaken, I've also seen "don tSaoil". Manhor92110, wait for a more proficient speaker than me to tune in! Fáilte Roimh Cheartúcháin Ceartaigh rud ar bith atá mícheart -- úsáid phrásaí go háirithe.

Rinne Vincente Minnelli scannán faoi Vincent Van Gogh leis an teideal sin thiar sa bhliain 1956. Níl mé cinnte faoin aistriúchán, ach is dócha go mbeadh an leagan Gaeilge an-éagsúil leis an mBéarla sa chás seo. Caminante no hay camino, se hace camino al andar.

quote:Lust for life = Ainmhian don tSaol Ní hea go baileach. Lust in english can be either positive or negative. The prefix Ain- is always negative. I'd suggest dúil [ainmfhocal baininscneach den dara díochlaonadh] fonn nó mian chun ruda (dúil i mbia, i dtobac); súil, dóchas (ná bíodh dúil agat leis, ná bí ag dúil leis). Dúil maireachtála Tá dúil maireachtála ionam. Manhor92110 translating is a tricky business; do you want just the slogan, or the whole song? Idioms and conventions don't translate well. |
