I've loved Irish, the language, culture and customs all my life, I'm coming to terms with my sexuality at the moment it's quite tough at the moment, what makes me sad a small bit is that when I look at different Gaelgeóirí I find very few that are homosexual, only one springs to mind Cathal ó Searcaigh, would I be right in saying that that Gaelgeóirí are conservative and cringe at the idea of homosexuals or are they Liberal minded? Are there examples of homosexuals like Cathal that might offer me some hope? I apologise if the tone of this message offends anyone, Thanks. |

are you talking about simply gaeilgeoirí or irish language enthusiasts? i think you'll find gaeilgeoirí are diversely minded as any group of people, although they represent a fairly small population pool mainly concentrated in a few fairly rural areas. Irish language enthusiasts come from all over the world and are likely to place common love of the language above other aspects of your personality they may or may not agree with. keep in mind, though, there are no absolutes when dealing with human populations and their opinions. |

Tá an scríbhneoir (gearrscéalta den chuid is mó) Micheál Ó Conghaile aerach. Scríobh sé úrscéal amháin, Sna Fír, faoi fhear óg aerach a tógadh sa Ghaeltacht, agus cúpla gearrscéal ar an ábhar céanna. Mura bhfuil dul amú orm, bhí/tá cúpla carachtar aerach ar Ros na Rún. Caminante no hay camino, se hace camino al andar.

I know of at least one gay Gaelgeóir here who will probably chime in. Meanwhile, take heart. I would bet a year's salary that you're not as alone as you think you are. |

i've never intentionally concealed my sexuality in the gaeltacht, and i've had no problems. i've generally found in life that if you are a good person, then people will like you...of course the gaeltacht is no exception. má tá suim agat ann, léigh an leabhar a luaigh dennis seo thuas ("sna fir" le micheál ó conghaile). úrscéal iontach iontach maith is ea é...scríbhneoireacht thar a bheith cliste agus greannmhar agus cumhachtach atá ann. beir bua, tadhg |

"I know of at least one gay Gaelgeóir here who will probably chime in." .... Could that be me by any chance lol!! I came out say 2 years ago - and now it's like every second Gaeilgeoir i meet is as gay as christmas! I think Gay-ilgeoirí always take a shine to each other.. You've two common passion's straight away - Buachaillí agus An Ghaeilge.. Believe me there is NO shortage of Gay-ilgeoirí in the cities.. The back arse of nowhere, well that's just a question of luck.. If you don't mind me asking where are you living? As in if you're in dublin you're in luck.. If you want someone to talk to, because i know fine well how horrible and extremely difficult coming out is, you can talk to me.. I'll give you my email if ya like? Well I'm more accepting myself, andbeing truthful to myself than trying to supress it which I think will only harm me in the long-term, did you come from a Gaeltacht area or what? Might read that book, thanks guys, I suppose this all came up as I've been thinking about my future etc... |

"Could that be me by any chance lol!!" I figured you might be of no small assistance to him. :) The isolation of living in a rural or quasi-rural area would be the biggest hinderance to somebody newly coming out, and I speak from experience. |

First of all, you're not alone - as you can see from the responses that have already been posted here. I remember there was a thread a few weeks (or is it already months?) ago; http://www.daltai.com/discus/messages/13510/19599.html I wanted to post back then but missed my chance... I heard of the book "Sna Fir" as well and was interested in buying it but didn't get the chance. Your descripiton raised my interest again... NB: Domhnall, although I know the offer was not directly directed at me but since you posted your mail in the other thread I would like to get in contact with you and have sent you a short mail Mise le meas, Stefan FRC - Fáilte Roimh Cheartúcháin

be proud of who you are!! do not let any one get you down for any reason. Be happy with your self. this took me a long time to cime to grips with my sexuality but in reality it is only a small part ot the whole me (what i do on my bedroom is my business) I think it is more important to be percieved a kind and generous person recognised for merit than sexuality. but above all you have to be true to who you are! I am amazed that people find it quirky that i have an interest in Irish and not bat an eye about being gay! Lol |

Bhíodh lánúin aerach ann tráth, duine acu a raibh tuin (bhréag-)Shasanach agus meigeall air. Is dócha gur imigh siad tamall ó shin. Caminante no hay camino, se hace camino al andar.

"but missed my chance... " This is all sounding a bit like a dating agency, or a bar! Ever heard of 'Mise Éire'?, Ye could do 'Mise Aerach', set to music and all! |
