Can anyone explain, or does anyone have a link to, or know of resources on his system for vowel transcription?

O Quiggin has all sort of statements such as these: "In the neighbourhood of palatal consonants u: is often like the vowel in German 'gut' (high-back-narrow-round)."

I get all but the narrow stuff. Does narrow refer to constriction somewhere

another is 'mid-back-wide-outer' for /æ/. It makes reading it confusing

In the case of German "gut," "narrow" might allude to the tight constriction of the lips in a very small "O" form... to pronounce that word correctly one's lips are almost in a position to whistle.

That's all I got!

Intuitively, is féidir ciall a bhaint as. Is dóigh gur mar a chéile "narrow" san úsáid seo agus "close" i dtéarmaí IPA. Agus mar sin, is féidir an chodarsnacht, atá in úsáid ag an údar seo, is cosúil, de "narrow" vs. "wide" a athdhéanamh (is dóch gur ionann iad agus "close" vs. "near-close" in IPA).

Tá "mid-back-wide-outer" ag fuaimniú mar rud as nuclear physics. :) Ní thigim é olc, maith ná donaí.
