Last night, for a laff, I decided on a whim as I was loking at page 8 of Noel McGonagle's 'Irish Grammar: A basic handbook', to count up the proportions of slender and broad sounds for both masc and fem nouns. I used Abhainn to tine, asal to teach (ran out of space on the notebook I scribbled on). The results: Feminine | | Masculine | | Palatal | Velar | Palatal | Velar | 50 | 19 | 16 | 43 | | It is 3:1 for feminine been more disposed to 'slender' and 2.5:1 for masculine to 'broad' sounds. So, if your brain is like a machine, you can now guess the gender on a whole group of words, even if a particualr one differs... |

I think there's a bit better craic to be had at the pub of a night, a BhRN. http://www.gaeilge.org FRC - Fáilte Roimh Cheartúcháin

Hoho! I was actually in bed, about to go to sleep, but flicked thru the book as I didnt have a better book to hand, had an idea, did a quick scribble, found some results. People are always looking to know the gender difference... |

Hey, its funny that you can be a loner, or odd, for reading an irish book just before going to bed, something I daresay lots do. It was a spontanous act; I'd thought i'd chip it in. Spontanity in bed, something you probably need more of, Cionadh |

Conas a déarfá é sin i nGaeilge, spontaneity in bed ? Tá spontáineacht san fhoclóir, ceart go leor, ach caithfidh go bhfuil dóigh níos dúchasaí ann len é sin a rá! Caminante no hay camino, se hace camino al andar.

Preab faoin bhraillín? I'm sorry, BRN, for making fun of your bed-time pursuits. You did practically walk into it, though! Is mise, Michal Boleslav Mechura
