Is there some chatroom in the Irish language somewhere on the web? I don't find any, although it's quite easy to make one. Maybe we could add one to this website...

I've tried to find something, but to no avail. There is a subscription service which I'm sure you've run across, but the site does not look very professionally done and it's impossible to know what you're getting before paying for those.

ie.yahoo.com has a chat feature if you can bear the horrendous chat format; I gave up after about ten minutes, but if you have more patience than I, it may have Irish rooms. Good luck!

You may enjoy this group:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/comhra

They do primarily audio & video chat, but text-based chat is also possible.

And what about a chatroom that's completely free, in which anybody can come? I'll make one (i've found a website that provides such stuff), if someone has a website to link it to. Cionaodh, could you make a link between your site gaeilge.org and that chat?

Loading the javascript on a page is easy enough; I set up a test page here and loaded their code:
http://www.gaeilge.org/comhra.html

I see three drawbacks:

1. There is software needed to use the chatroom. It's a free download, but will only work on Windows OS (nothing for Mac, Linux or Unix).

2. There's a €29.90 fee to get moderator status. A one-time fee, but not really worthwhile for a system that's Windows-only.

3. It places Google ads on the page. This wouldn't be a big deal for me if the service were free and not limited to Windows-users, but in this case, it adds insult to injury.

Anybody know of a service that doesn't have such obstacles?

I think this one might work -- anyone care to try it?
http://sitechat.siteprotect.com/craiceailte.com/craiceailte.html

One would have to know when others would be available online. The Comhrá group on Yahoo has the same problem -- people around the world, different time zones, not always online at the same time everyday, etc.

Ok, I'm in that chatroom (craiceáilte) now. I live in Brittany, so just now it is 0.54 (or do u say 12.54am in English?) here.

Má shocraímid am faoi leith -- molaimse 8.30 pm am na hÉireann -- seans go dtiocfaidh daoine ag an am sin. Ní mór fanacht leath-uair an chloig ar a laghad nó ní chasfar éinne ar a chéile ann. (Tá an t-am ag brath ar na cláracha teilifíse -- Fair City, Nuacht TG4 srl)

Ní féidir liomsa bheith ann amárach ach seans go bhféadfadh daoine eile ....

I clicked on the link that O'Dywer shows above and it takes me to the Irish-only discussion forum here at Daltai. I think there's a difference between chatrooms and discussion forums in that chatrooms are spontaneous interchanges between participants and discussion forums are permanent records of the participants' remarks that can be viewed soon after or any time after they are entered.

Anyway, I tried getting to the chatroom but couldn't get the software to work. Probably something to do with the Software Gardai.

má tá "chat" de dhíth oraibh, molaim an grúpa a chuir mé féin chun tosnú chom maith, is féidir cláracha ar nós Yahoo!messenger, MSN Messenger srl a úsáid chun comhrá a dhéanamh, agus chomh maith le sin, is féidir níos mó ná duine amhain a bheith á úsáid chun chat clóscríobh nó chat os ard (comhrá) a dhéanamh, go deimhin. fadhb amháin ná--an mbíonn daoine le fáil ag an am céanna? conas a socraítear cruinneatha agus bíonn gach duine ar scéidéal difriúil...tá dhá bhealach an fadhb seo a sheachaint--tá féilire ann ar suíomh an ghrúpa, agus is féidir le daoine a scríobh ar an bhféilire cad iad na huaireanta an mbíonn siad ar fáil, agus ansin is féidir le duine eile cruinniú a dhéanamh leat. agus leis, is féidir teachtaireacht a sheoladh chuig an ghrúpa iomlán, ag insint daoibh cén uair an mbeidh tú ar líne, nó go bhfuil tú ar líne díreach anois, mar shámpla...

muise, níl aon suíomh áirithe i gceist anseo--níl aon "seomra chat" i gceist. mar sin, tá sé níos solúbtha. agus--ag úsáid na cláracha a chuir mé in iúl thuas, is féidir a fheiceáil cé atá ar líne am ar bith--ní gá dul chun suíomh ar leith.

measaim féin gur cleachteadh comhrá an rud atá in easnamh againn go léir mar fhoghlaimeóirí...is breá liom clóscríobh le daoine as Ghaeilge, ach is fearr liom caint os ard. ceapaim--más féidir leat labhairt go líofa, b'fhéidir leat scríobh go líofa chomh maith. de gnáth!

seo seoladh an tsuíomh--

seol ríomhphoist chugam má tá níos mó eolas uait.
