I just picked up this little silver and green pocket dictionary at a bookstore because it was onsale for $4. Is it any good? I can't seem to find what dialect it favors ... it says nothing in the introduction. Has anyone used this dictionary? Coimhéad fearg fhear na foighde.

Hi Aindréas, I've had my little Collins for nearly two years now. Very good first dictionary! I'd say it's probably the best that's commonly available here in the US. At some point you'll want to trade up to the two "standards": Ó Dónaill (Irish-English) and De Bhaldraithe (English-Irish). I wouldn't recommend starting with them, though! Spelling and grammar in it are Standard, and I haven't noticed any particular dialect bias in the vocabulary either. Hope this helps... Abigail Tá fáilte roimh chuile cheartú!

Thank you everyone for your comments. I'm glad it seems to be a good one! Riona, my apologies for not responding. I've barely had time to check my email all week ... I shouldn't even be on this board; it's eating away at my precious time. Next week, however! I haven't forgotten you! =D Coimhéad fearg fhear na foighde.
