Scríobh Cionadh (is dóigh liom go raibh droch lá aige. Nó tá súil agam é).

quote:

One hopes this is an entirely unrelated topic, but breakingnews.ie reports that a 24 year old Lithuanian has been stabbed to death in Dublin.

One of the features of immigration to Ireland has been some violence within immigrant communities - the Minister for Justice has been trying to address this by actively recruiting immigrants. This is something which came to attention here because he was apparently weaking the requirement for Irish to do so.

I understand another Lituanian has been arrested in this case.

But I think the post was in bad taste.

I don't think it was in bad taste, a Aonghuis. Níl Cionadh mar sin. I was worried nuair a léigh mé é, just as bhí imní orm nuair a bhí mé óg agus bhí buama i mBaile Átha Cliath agus bhí mo dhearthair ceapaithe bheith san áit sin ag an am sin. It's like my concern for those in Lebanon and other areas of conflict. Ach nuair atá aithne againn ar na daoine, we're concerned more if they're in an area of danger. Despite what we might feel about how Róman communicates, no one wishes him ill. I prayed harder last night.
I always want to know what's going on in the world agus cén fáth. Fiú má bhíonn an fhírinne searbh. Unless we know we can't try to make things better. Tá suim agam anois i gcúrsaí immigrants in Éirinn. Go raibh maith agat for telling us a little more about it.

Caitríona

Go ndéana Dia a mhaith ar an duine bocht a maraíodh is go mbeire sé sólás croí dá mhuintir a bhfuil cnap bróin ar a gcroí, ní foláir.

Beidh mé ag casadh le Róman amárach anseo i Luimneach a chairde agus 'neosfad dó go bhfuil sibh ag cur a thuairisce. Beidh sé ag tabhairt aghaidh ar Chill na Martra go bhféacha sé a chuid Gaelainne le muintir na háite is go bhfíora sé a aisling ' chois an tSúláin.

D'éalaigh mé as an oifig, le tamall, agus nuair nach raibh mé gnóthach i dTír Chonaill, nó i Sligeach/Liatroim na lus, bhíos gafa anseo, geábhanna.

Go dtí amárach a chairde, sgf le gach beannacht.

'Míle maith agat a Sheosaimh. 'Ceart agat. Go dtuga Dia sólás dóibh siúd atá ag fulaingt. Is go dté tú féin agus Róman slán. Go néirí an tádh libh ar an turas.

But I think the post was in bad taste.

I meant no offense, nor do I wish Róman any bad luck. As I've written elsewhere, I like the fellow -- despite his occasional lapses of civility here.

My apologies if I offended anyone by mentioning the news.

I for one wish to say that I very much like Roman. He's a really important part of this forum. He's smart and interesting, though he has the ability to get under some peoples' skin, its because he just has very strong convictions about language issues. He's the sort of man who just says flat out what he means without putting tact upon it. But he's never said an ill word to me and I appreciate him.

So it's okay for him to denigrate and insult Forum members who have been speaking and studying Irish far longer than he has as long as he is nice to you?

No one is so important that he is entitled to abuse the other members of this Forum. Posters are asked to be polite in their discussions of the language. He fails miserably in that department.

Well he speaks, mar a dúirt Riona , 'without putting tact upon it.' That's tactless in other words, but Riona has the gift of diplomacy. I really mean that Riona. You're a natural peace-maker. I hope you can use that talent in life. Heaven knows, the world needs peacemakers.
And you're right Lucy, it's not OK to denigrate and insult Forum members or anyone but I already said what I think on that one. I'd like the 'Keep the posts polite' requirement implemented more rigidly because words can hurt more than people know.
However with the story of the murder my thoughts are for his well-being and as much as I would wish he'd not hurt others with his tone, I also wish that he himself not be hurt.
Now that Aonghus got me thinking about the state of immigrants in Ireland, I found this short film:
Fáilte go hÉirinn
in the drámaí section at
http://www.tg4.ie/Webt/webt.htm
on that very topic.
Oh the free TnaG is great!
