A Chairde,

I've put together a list of what I think are must-know verbs in Irish. The list totals 88 verbs and I consider it at best a start in the verbs one should know to have a basic level of proficiency in Irish, at least verbally. Some of the verbs are important because of their use as verbal-noun forms. I've placed the list at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/irishlinguistics

You'll find the list under Files/Parts of Speech. I plan on adding to the list and correlating it to verbal nouns and nouns in general that are derived from verbs.

I've tried placing the list on the Irish_linguistics geocities website but I'm having trouble figuring out the html code to get the file to show correctly.

Anyway, if you're interested in viewing the list and discussing the verbs and there resultant verbal nouns, please have a look.

As I mentioned in my post above, the list is currently at the Yahoo group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/irishlinguistics

Unfortunately, or fortunately if you're inclined towards engaging in linguistic discussions for absolute beginners (like myself) or advanced professionals, membership is required. What I was trying to say above is that I'm having trouble figuring out how to get such a list to the geocities website. Although I have been able to upload the verbs' list to the geocities website, the file does show itself. I think it has something with html code.
Since I still have flashbacks to my programming days of FORTRAN, writing in any code, including html, is one of my least favorite activies.

Sooner or later I'll figure out how to get the list to show on my geocities website. But for those who don't mind they can join the irishlinguistics site, get the list and then quit the group. I promise that my feelings won't be hurt if anyone or everyone quits the group instantaneously or even simultaneously. What I would ask for though is your comments and critiques of my starting list.

For example, what other verbs should be listed? One of the members of the irishlinguistics group has already suggested some very good improvements to the list, so I'd like to hear more.

I think the list needs to grow, for example I made the "unthinkable" mistake {pun intended) of forgetting to list the verb "síl." I will add this and probably some others to the list come Monday. I haven't shown the English translations yet, because I have this notion of showing the translations visually, such as with jpeg thumbnails or clipart. That will avoid the need to go from Irish to English or vice-versa.

I'd like to point out that this list is comprised of the verbs need for basic proficiency. It's not a list that will contain every verb in Irish.

After I finish this list, maybe I'll work on a list of least-to-know Irish verbs, then work my way towards the middle.,

In my first paragraph immediately above, I meant to say "it does not show."
