If I read the news correctly, Irish is now an official language in the EU!! Finally!! And I also read that the EU is now in need of Irish-speaking lawyers who can put Irish legal parlance on official EU proceedings/documents, agus araile!

Which leads me to wonder: If an Irish representative to the EU were to Actually address the EU body in Irish, is there an Irish-speaking legal stenographer alive today who is able to transcribe spoken Irish into written Irish "on-the fly" so that the transcription could be certified as a legal document?!??

When I listen to Nuacht a hAon, I shudder at the thought of my having to transcribe the spoken Irish into written Irish "on-the-fly!!"

Yep, Irish has been an official language of the European Union for a while. All members of the EU voted for it, however it will reach full status in 2007.

Athscríobh, there are indeed such people. How do you imagine that Imeachtaí Dháil Éireann are compiled? :)

There are also, moreover, those who perform simultaneous translation and, in my experience, they do it wonderfully well.

Congratulations to the Irish language!
This is a great triumph -- in my opinion!
Hopefully, it can spread knowledge of the language and make it more popular in Éire.

Some of them do speak Irish in meetings sometimes. It has been like that for as long as I know. Sometimes I come across Dail transcripts on the Internet from as far back as the 30s or 40s until recently and they say things in Irish now and again, some of them do it more often and so there is similtanious translation for that purpose. As to what I know everyone gets headphones and they can listen on there to the translations into English on the occasion that someone speaks Irish, this of course for those who havn't got good command of the language.

I fully realise that I proffer this question at the risk of being labeled a Heretic, but the real Heretics in this are the anti-Irish-language east-side yuppies who refuse to recognise Irish as Ireland's official language as it is stipulated in the Irish Constitution!!

Of course we all wish that there was more Irish spoken in the Dail, or that everyone just spoke Irish all the time in meetings. I was just saying how I know it to be at present. You're right though that it isn't enough.
