If yo refer to question particles: an: to be used in all tenses except past tense of most verbs ar (< an + ro): to be used in past tense of most verbs. That's the only difference. Lars (Message edited by Lars on June 01, 2006) |

If you wanna be very basic: an is the definite article, the 'the' of Irish when in the null cases an followed by a masc noun just means 'the X'. Bord (table) -->an bord 'the table'. With a fem noun it results in lenition. Ex: 'cuileog' (fly) --> 'an chuileog' 'the fly' ar is the prepostion meaning 'on'. It will generally result in lenition when a noun follows of eiher gender ar bhord 'on a table' ar shúil 'on an eye' |
