'Tis rare that anything Irish brings a tear to me eye nowadays, but last evening I was tuned into a Public Television Show and they were promoting/selling CDs by Frank Patterson, Ireland's Golden Tenor, and playing selections from Patterson's CDs, and when Patterson sang "Danny Boy" and "Turadh loo-ra-loo-rai" yes adhmai/m e/, a tear did come to me eye!!reminding me that my only regret in Life is that I was not born and blessed with a golden tenor voice like Patterson's!! Seo i/ mo cheist daoibh: Did Frank Patterson ever record any CDs in Irish?? and if so,where can I purchase them?? Go raibh mi/le maith agaibh, Yank |

I would doubt fellows of that era would be heard with any Irish songs. Remember, Ireland was deeply demoralised during the era that much of his material was penned, and singing in Irish would not have occured. He may not have been able to do so anyway. Even when the career went beyond 1922, it would not have mattered. Informants I have spoke to and friends have, tell us people jeered Amhrán na bhFian till the 60s and prefered it in English |

Aonghus a chara-Thanx for the info! I punched up the site you suggested and I read that Patterson entered the "Feis Cheoil" in Dublin in 1964, and in no less than four competions he took away top honours, including oratario, leider, and the German Gold Cup!!?? To me ""Feis Cheoil" means Irish Language Festival(with competions) which leads me to wonder still why there are no Patterson CDs in Irish!! I guess the answer to my question is explained in what Robert wrote above; that in the 60s 'twas unpopular to sing/record in Irish because there was no international market for traditional Irish music in Irish. Thanx again for your info! Go maire ár dTeanga i bhfad!! Yank |

"Feis Ceoil" is simply a music festival. |

Tuigim go maith! 'Tis not my intention to be 'duine doranna' annseo, but if the festival has to do with English-language music, it should be publicised as "Music Festival" instead of "Feis Cheoil!" Thanx for your input, Yank |

But there are entries in both languages as well as musical instruments. I doubt Mr. Patterson sang as Gaeilge but I have heard many a singer at a feis sing in Irish having no knowledge of the language except for the memorized piece |
