A chairde,

Someone from the department of Community Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs says she's willing to help me with my research and she sent me an e-mail telling me to call her. Her name is E'adaoin, (' is equal to fada over E) and I'd just want to make sure I know how to say her name correctly because I'm nervous enough about making this phonecall in the first place and I'd just die if I said her name wrong. I'd assume its like AYaDEEN (obviously it won't sound so ... American like and dipthongly but that's the only way I know how to write pronunciations). Go raibh maith agaibh for your help.

Beir bua agus beannacht

Maith thú a Riona! Sorry I can't help with the pronunciation. Just an idea - I work with folks from all over the world and whenever I come across a name I don't know how to pronounce, I simply ask the person how to pronounce their name. Maybe that would work in your situation. The person is always more than willing to help me with the pronunciation of their name. Again, just an idea.

It is pronounced AYdeen, the first syllable being stressed (and stretched).

Go raibh maith agaibh, a chairde.

Now, she gave me this phone number and I was wondering if I just dial this exact number or do I need to dial a country code which she hasn't included. If so I'd very much be gladd if someone might tell me what it is.

The country code for Ireland is 353. That is an Irish mobile number. I think you dial 0035387...

If that is a real number then if you can edit the message you should probably remove the number or change it to something like 087xxxxxxx

A Riona,

To access an international telephone number (mobile or fixed line) you must first dial an access code, which in many countries is "00". followed by the code for the country you're dialling (as stated, in Ireland's case "353"). You then need to remove an initial "0" from the subscriber's number.

That access code is usually "00" but check with your phone service provider as some may use a different code. You'll often find that information in your phone book.

Le meas,

Larry Ackerman

Go raibh maith agaibh, a chairde.

I need to see if my calling card will cover international calls but I can't find it right now, blasted. At any rate I probably can't call until Mon. anyway because its a work number so I've got time. I wrote her an e-mail (before I realized that my phonecard might cover it) asking if we might perhaps do this over e-mail because of the great distance involved. So she wrote backand said she'd want my number then. I don't want to trouble her in any way because I'm the one seeking information so I don't want her to expend extra unnecessary energy on me but I figured I'd ought to write back and tell her it, though I'll try to call her instead on Mon. So, amadan that I happen to be, I need to ask the all of you what the country code for the united States is, because noone around me knows it, I know that's embarrassing. I can't figure out why she absolutely must talk to me rather than writing to me. Buiochas
