I live in Virginia and I've been trying to learn Irish for several years by myself, but it's tough going. My parents are willing to send me off to Ireland to learn Irish there at a camp or something. Know any good ones? Thanks!

It's not a camp, per se--more like a B&B with a class--but I can highly recommend this one:

A half dozen of us went there and had a great time and learned quite a bit. We had a gracious Bean an tí who provided more wonderful food than we could possibly eat.

I live in VA too and have had consistent trouble with maintaining a class. My teacher (fáinic thú féin) moved so that class was gone, and only other class I know of is too far in Maryland to drive to each week ... but I did go, it was called Scoil Scairte and was pretty good.

Rinne Máire gáire gan náire ag an fhaire i nDoire anuraidh.

Droch, a chara,

Tá cúpla smaoineamh duit:

I've heard good things about Gaeltalk (http://www.gaeltalk.net/index1.html)
and their e-tutoring program.

I like Now You're Talking/Irish on Your Own, the book/tape set.

Maybe a blend of attending Daltaí na Gaeilge events (and those of other groups) plus some at-home studying would work for you. And an occasional immersion course in Ireland, at Áras Uí Chadhain or Oideas Gael.

Ádh mór,
Paul

Dearg, I found it, but there's no ENglish translatoon button or anything. Anyone care to traslate? - Thanks

á Áras Mháirtín Uí Chadhain ar cheann de na hionaid Ghaeltachta atá ag Oifig na Gaeilge Labhartha, Ollscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh. Is Ionad Sealbhaithe agus Buanaithe Gaeilge é atá lonnaithe ar an gCeathrú Rua i gcroílár Ghaeltacht Chonamara. Tá Áras Mháirtín Uí Chadhain ag feidhmiú ó 1977. Cuirtear cúrsaí Gaeilge agus cúrsaí trí Ghaeilge i réimse leathan ábhar ar fáil do mhic léinn agus d'aosaigh ó chian agus ó chóngar. Soláthraítear scéimeanna stáit atá múnlaithe do phobail labhartha na Gaeilge agus a neartaíonn scileanna teanga agus fostaíochta na bpobal sin.

Ainmníodh an tÁras in ómós an scríbhneora Máirtín Ó Cadhain, fear a chaith a shaol ag iarraidh an ghaeilge a chur chun cinn. Chaith sé seal mar mhúinteoir náisiúnta, aistritheoir cáipéisí dlí don Oireachtas, Colúnaí seachtainiúil don Irish Times agus léachtóir agus ollamh le Gaeilge i gColáiste na Tríonóide.
