Dia dhaoibh, Tá ceist amháin agam. In the book "An Teanga Bheo: Gaeilge Oileán Chléire" nothing is said how "éa" is pronounced in the dialect. I presume it must be "broken" as in all other Munster dialects into /ia/ or /ië/ (ë - schwa). In "Modern Irish" - Ó Siadhail maintains that in Clear Island it is pronounced /ië/, but no examples are given. While being very useful - the book has some inconsistencies and I am cautious towards information in it. Furthermore, pronunciation of /ië/ is unlike the one in An Rinn or Múscraí which are closest to it both geographically and linguistically. One can even argue that Oileán Chléire, Múscraí and extinct Carberry dialect make one "central Munster" dialect area. Alternatively pronunciation /ië/ is given like a variant in Corca Dhuibhne (source "An Teanga Bheo: Gaeilge Chorca Dhuibhne".) So maybe someone with (I presume) "Stáir na Gaeilge" can clarify what is the Cléire way pronouncing "éa"? Le meas |
