quote:"Honor Above All Else" Onóir in Uachtar (literally, Honor on Top, Honor Uppermost) quote:"To Thine Own Self Be True" If you want it to remain Shakespeare, keep it in English. The meaning in Irish, without the same poetic ring: Bí Dílis Duit Féin (lit., Be Faithful/Loyal to Yourself) So, are you getting ink? |

Dear Sir/Madam: I recently purchased a home and when I have my housewarmng party I wish to pass around the family quaich so we can all drink. I would like to say something like health and welcome to my guests or health and long life, something fitting for the occasion. I did find a website of Scots Gaelic sayings mostly having to do with weddings, and the birth of babies, but as I have more familiarity with Irish, ie. book Irish...I would feel more comfortable saying something in that language. I love your page and use a lot of the proverbs as "signatures" on my e-mail's, maybe you could add one for toasts, blessings, congratulations if you've a mind for it. Thanks in advance for any help you might offer me. go raibh maith agat (you may answer directly to my e-mail) GiollaCriost Uagraillaig (Gilly) |

Aonghus and Lucy: Thanks for the suggestions. I believe Lucy's response, though addressed to Aonghus is a response to my inquiry, if not nevermind, but if so, I believe it says Welcome and Blessings of the House on you?... Giolla |
