Hello all. Ive recently decided that, as one of the language most accessible and relevant to me, i would try and learn Irish. As i can already comprehend written Irish fairly well and am familiar with most aspects of the grammar and vocabulary quite a lot of the Irish language learning materials in English are irrelevant or unnecessary in my case. Are any of you aware of learning materials which cater for those already fluent in a Gaelic language to learn one of the other Gaelic languages?

le meas,

Calum Iain

Good question. There ought to be a "Gaeilge gan Dua do Gàidhligeoirí" ann, ach ní fhaca mé a leithéid riamh. There have been specific immersion programs for ScG speakers in Ireland,
and vice versa, mar atá a fhios agat, is dócha. Just for the record, there are two books that do "cater for those already fluent in a Gaelic language to learn one of the other Gaelic languages":

1. Gàidhlig Uidhist a Deas (Téacsleabhar) le Gordon Mac Gill-Fhinnein (DIAS, 1966)

This is an intro to Scottish Gaelic for Irish speakers. Tosaíonn an brollach leis na focail seo: "Go dtí seo, nuair ba mhian le lucht labhartha Ghaeilge na hÉireann Gaeilge na hAlban a fhoghlaim b'éigean dóibh a bheith taobh le leabhair a scríobhadh (a) do dhaoine nach raibh Gaeilge de chineál ar bith acu...."

2. SeanGhaeilge gan Dua le Pádraig Ó Fiannachta

Is teanga an-deacair í an tSean-Ghaeilge do dhaoine nach bhfuil Nua-Ghaeilge nó Gàidhlig acu cheana féin, ach níl sí chomh deacair sin dúinne. Díríonn an leabhar beag seo ar na difríochtaí idir an tseanteanga agus teanga an lae inniu. Ní mhínítear na rudaí a thuigeann muid cheana féin tóisc go bhfuil siad beo fós sa teanga.
