Just beginning at the beginning and would like advice on choosing a textbook; which would be better - Buntus Cainte or Progress in Irish? Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated. I am in the USA, Clare County, Michigan. Third generation Irish American. |

Buntus Cainte teaches basic conversational Irish, in 3 books with accompanying audio, and Progress in Irish is designed for beginners and those who wish to take a refresher course in one handy book. Neither of them give very much grammar so, and this is more true of Buntus Cainte than of Progress In Irish, you can be left wondering. But it's purely a matter of individual taste, in my opinion, which is the better of the two courses. Both of these books are covered in Yahoo groups as mentioned in other threads on this site. I find buntús better for beginners, with progress good to start as you near the end of buntús vol 1. |

Antaine, thank you very much for that suggestion. I am going to try to get the Buntus Cainte in time to take part in that Yahoo group. The Progress in Irish group has already started and I don't have a book for that yet. I have had a copy of Teaching Yourself Irish and have pecked around in it but without any CD, etc. to help. Needless to say I didn't accomplish anything with that. Got to get ready quick! Talk to you all soon! |
