Since late last year, three new Yahoo groups have been formed which are each studying one of the dialects. Unlike other Gaeilge-related Yahoo groups, these three have thrived because they're working together from a single textbook and are following a schedule in their studies.

Progress in Irish by Máiréad Ní Ghráda is a very popular book for learning standard (i.e. non-dialectical) Irish. I've used it for years in my classes, as have some of my colleagues, and the folks at Scoil Ghaeilge (http://www.scoilgaeilge.org) use it as well.

There are now Progress in Irish answer keys available online (http://www.gaeilge.org/PII-ak.html) and audio files of the vocabulary (http://www.philo-celtic.com/PII/Progress.htm). While it's possible with these resources to work one's way through Progress in Irish on one's own, perhaps folks might like to do so with a group?

If so, I'd be happy to start one, and offer whatever comments seem warranted on each lesson as they occur. Additionally, working through the book with a group would allow folks an opportunity to ask questions and/or benefit from questions asked & answered by others.

And finally, doing this in such a group would create a semi-permanent archive from which later learners may benefit.

What think ye?

A chara, tá sé go hiontach!

That's a great idea Cionaodh! Progress In Irish is probably one of the most widely used books out there and those audio recordings and answer sheets are a huge help.

The trouble with trying to learn a particular dialect is it seems there aren't enough good resources out there for each one. They all seem to be lacking in some respect. Learning Irish is great for reading/writing irish, but lacks exercises for speaking it. The opposite can be true for Irish On Your Own. Plus the other great advantage with PII ( Progress In Irish ) is that it is quite inexpensive, but contains a ton of material. The only thing I would like to see - if it isn't too much trouble; is if there were a short grammar explanation for each chapter of PII. When I took some lessons online before, my tutor created one for each lesson of PII that we went over. You would be the perfect person to oversee such a group as you've taught for quite a while with PII. I hope other people embrace this idea, I think it would be perfect for so many. Go raibh míle maith agat a chara!

Slán go fóill,

Terry

A Chionaodh,

I had joined the TYI group that you and Kevin started and enjoyed it. I was also surprised to find how challenging the Munster dialect is.

I would be very interested and appreciative if you started such a group in PII since the material in that book is much easier for me grasp than the Munster dialect.

Go raibh maith agat.

An-mhaith, a Chionaodh!

Count me in.

However, I'll be leaving on Saturday for a one-week vacation--so don't take any lack of response from me for the next week as anything negative; I just won't be around to reply.

Ar aghaidh libh:

I'll broaden the invitation to other groups/forums shortly.

We'll get underway in a week or so, but please join and introduce yourselves while we wait for others from the various lists to get on board.

Membership will be moderated for the time being until I get a handle on what method is best for controlling spammers & trolls.

Cionaodh, will the archives be publicly available to non-members?

You mean past messages, uploaded files, etc.?

My experience in other groups is that such things were available only to members, but this may be some kind of setting available to moderators. I'll have a look and let you know.

Membership, BTW, needn't be a problem -- one need only set their membership to "no mail" to simply have access to the group's site/files, etc.

Cionaodh, there is a setting that will make messages available to non-members. From the point of view of the group's administrator this is sub-optimal, as those people reading the archives in that way will not be included in any round-robin emails you may wish to send out.

Should have mentioned I have also ordered the book from Amazon. In the process now of downloading all of the vids and audios from the nagaeilmagazine.com site. The vids are great, just like a live instructor to see and hear the words spoken.

This is the site I got the vids and audios off of. I thought I got it from here, been looking so much on line for Irish Gaelic sites I kind of go around in circles sometimes.

It's a good idea to provide videos. I am no expert on Irish pronunciation, but I didn't like those videos. I don't think the speaker is a native Irish speaker - seems like a guide to "American Irish". I am unsure about the value of presenting Irish pronunciation as a series of choices - 3 choices for this vowel, 2 choices for that, 2 choices for pronounciation of d etc. The end result will be an absurd mishmash of pronunciation. Better to learn one dialect - and learn that dialect's pronunciation. I am not sure the speaker on the videos could say either a broad or a slender r. I am willing to be corrected by a more expert view...

After one day of existence, the new group has almost two dozen members!

I've just set up a poll to help us decide how fast we'll proceed -- i.e. how often will we do a new lesson. Join us now and help decide the pace:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/progressinirish/

We'll have a look at lesson one starting around Wednesday the 22nd, so as to give folks a few days to hear about the group and join.

Cionaodh,a Chara,

I am studying with a group in Euclid, Ohio, and we are using "Progress in Irish." I want to be part of your online group and I will tell my fellow students about this.

Thanks, go raibh maith agat,

Bob

Cionaodh: Will it be possible for a beginner like myself to progress along smoothly at a beginning pace without holding back people like Bob, who are obviously much more advanced. Can there be a group of absolute beginners and a group of those already into Irish?

And as far as the vids are concerned, any bit of help I can get I appreciate. Seeing and hearing even though it might not be to others liking can still be helpful. I think the instructor on the vids is showing there are other ways and dialects available just like there would be for someone coming to America and learning English. Heaven only knows how many dialect we have in the United States.

Bluejay, we'll only be doing one lesson at a time, starting with lesson one -- about as basic as it gets.

For folks who've gone through PII before, these early lessons will simply be review -- and may well be boring, but they're signing on regardless. Having such people along will be a big help for beginners, as there'll be more than one person answering questions.

As regards pace, there's a poll at the group's site asking for input. If you haven't already voted, make yourself heard.

My own preference is one lesson per week (and it's what I do in my "live" classes), but we can do things faster or slower as people wish.

Some time ago, I converted New Irish Grammar by the Christian Brothers into .pdf for my own use. I also converted Progress In Irish into a Microsoft Word document.

I would be happy to share the latter if any of your students are unable to obtain a copy of the book.

Larry -- would you mention that MS Word document in the PII group? There may be some folks who won't have the book before we start lesson one on Wednesday, and it would be nice if they had something to use to follow along with everyone until they can get the book. GRMA!

A novice, I signed up. "Weekly" reads good, I'll go vote. However, I do travel over the road a lot, and I'm not sure I can participate regularly. ;-(
Also, I plan to tell a friend who has an interest, and some experience with the Irish language.

I've told six others about the group, some of whom have been coming to Daltaí weekends. None of them have had the opportunity to get on and join yet, so you may get another small surge...

Also had a woman in the store today (in NJ) that I was able to have a short conversation with as Gaeilge...she'd been here 20 years and so was far out of practice, but had lived near the Kerry gaeltacht when she was younger...

She was the second one this month and the fourth one this year for me (plus, then they'll always remember who their salesman was...)
