Certain grammatical units have their last consonant made slender or broad depending on how the following word begins:

an oíche: /@N i:/
an idé: /@N' ide:/

d'ól: /do:L/
d'ith: /d'i/

Does it also happen with:

m'athair / m'idé
d'athair / d'idé
ag ól / ag ithe

?

Tarlaíonn sé le ag agus le d' / t' gan dabht. Níl mé cinnte faoi m' -- ní chloisim aon difríocht sna samplaí thuas ar aon nós.

oíche: /@ Ni:/
an idé: /@ N’id’e:/

d'ól: /do:L/
d'ith: /d'i/

You got:

m'athair /mæ:r’/

m'idé /m’id’e:/

d'athair / tæ:r’/

d'idé /t’id’e:/

ag ól /ə go:L/

ag ithe /ə g’i:/

The consonant is usually affected, except for /r/ probably. Usually there are several options. I’ll try to expand on the topic a bit later. Cheers

Max, since you started with Cois Fhairrge Irish:

«318. … Ní húsáitear m’ agus t’ ach amháin roimh ghuthaí tosaigh. m agus t a úsáitear roimh ghuthaí cúil, agus go minic roimh ghuthaí tosaigh (is minicí m roimh ghuthaí tosaigh ná t), e.g. t’iəkil’ t’fhiacail, t’iL’iN’ t’uillinn; ə m’e:dəN i m’éadan, ma:nəm m’anam, ta:səL t’asal; ə mi:n’i∫ i m’fhiadhnais; ə me:dəN i m’éadan; əN te:dəN in t’éadan.»

>>> An bhuilir cinnte? I think it is always [əg'] before vowels.

«414. … > əg, roimh ainm briathartha thosaíos le guthaí cúil, e.g. əg o:L ag ól.
> əg’, roimh a. br. thosaíos le ghuthaí tosaigh, e.g. əg’ i: ag ithe.

Úsáitear əg roimh ghuthaí cúil a tháinig ó ghuthaí tosaigh sna focla əg umpər ag iomchar; əg unsi: ag ionnsaí; əg umpu: ag iompú; əg a:Li:n’ ag ealadhain.
Úsáitear əg’ uaireanta roimh ghuthaí tosaigh a tháinig ó ghuthaí cúil sa bhfocal əg aibr’u:, əg’ aibr’u: ag oibriú.»

(Gaeilge Chois Fhairrge: an Deilbhíocht, T. de Bhaldraithe)

Le meas, Peter
