Anyone try the "Google Earth" application, using places in Éireann? It's fairly low resolution compared to the US, but it had no problems finding Carraroe (An Ceathrú Rua) or Ballinskelligs (Baile an Sceilg). Just don't try searching on the Irish spellings.

Tá sé "cool"!

Google Earth does display the county names in Irish. It also shows other place names in Irish only. Example: Bull Island in Dublin Bay is shown as "Qileán an Bhulla", the 'Q' should be a 'O'. It's very random. It think it depends on the zoom level. Sometimes it will display 'Baile Átha Cliath' and surounding counties in Irish, but when you fiddle with the zoom it changes to English.

Some mountains and rivers are also only in Irish no matter what zoom level you're at. Interesting.

Yeah, Ceolmhar, lakes seem to be in Irish, too. It seems as confused as the Irish government's language policy. :-)

I've uploaded some sample pictures :) Have a gander.

You will see that it's half-half Irish and English in the second picture. Sometimes it's all Irish or all English. Good old Google!
