The Philo-Celtic Society now has a 'vodcast' site, as well as a podcast. I've tried to keep the Irish in these videos reasonably accessible, and would like to encourage anyone with some conversational Irish to give them a try. The visual aspect will of course aid understanding.

Our vodcast is http://philo-celtic-feesh.blogspot.com/
Right now, there are two. We are offering to put videos here which other people make, so if you think you can do it, give it a try! We're available if you need help.

The podcast, all in Irish and somewhat more difficult, is http://philo-celtic.blogspot.com/
There has been at least one new episode a week for a while now. The last two have been with Conn from the podcast an tImeall (http://imeall.blogspot.com/).

If anyone has questions about what is being said on any of these, please ask.

Fluency comes from practice, and listening to these things will help you a lot.

Maith an fear, a Shéamais!

I'm afraid that some of us with older computers will have to sit this show out, however, as the new .m4v format won't work with earlier incarnations of Quicktime before version 7 (6 was the last version available for my OS).

Best of luck with it; I hope many folks will benefit.

I can handle RAM, WMV and MOV files, but not M4V.
Quicktime 7 isn't compatible with my OS.
I hope the rest of you fare better with it.

What OS are you using? Did you look at their site to see if there is another version?

I use Mac OS 9.2.2; Quicktime 6 was the last version made for that OS.

The ".m4v" file format is fairly new and wasn't in use yet when Quicktime 6 was developed.

I understand that Quicktime 7 also isn't available for Windows 98.

Here's the download for Macintosh:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/mac.html

I doubt they will make it for older operating systems. It has to be in this format to be playable on an iPod, that's why I am using it.

A Shéamas,

Any chance of you converting and posting the files in another format along with the m4v? m4v seems to be iPod and new-Mac only. I've looked quite a bit and I can't find anything that'll allow it to be played on a PC. Also, some iPod-esque devices, such as some of those by Creative Labs (which I highly recommend), won't play m4v's.

mp4 or mpeg4 would probably be a good choice...

My six-year old, steam-powered Compaq can handle my Creative Labs player, and any of the file formats it supports, such as mpeg4, just fine... If I can use it, then anyone should be able to, including the iPod people.

That's just not true. I have a link to Quicktime 7 for Windows 2000/XP on the page, as well as the link for Macs.
Isn't m4v the same as mpeg4?
I think it would be way too costly in space to publish them in multiple formats.

Yes, you're correct. I forgot to type in Win2000/xp. Yesterday was a bad day.

As far as the file formats go, in practice, I've found that they are not totally compatible.

I saved your .m4v and changed the file extension to .mp4, and the audio portion would play in my Real player, on my old machine, running Windows ME, but not the video... People who are unable to play the file might want to change the extension and try it. Incidentally, mpeg4 has been around since 1998, and Microsoft claims that their media player 7.1 can play mpeg4's...

Windows Media Player 10 claims it'll play .mpeg4, but it won't play your .m4v, even if I change the extension. I tried it on a new XP machine, and it wouldn't go. Obviously, someone with an XP could just download Apple's player, my point here is there seems to be something about the .m4v that isn't a standard mpeg4.

Anyway...

The movie was great - it is so much easier to learn in a context where one can "see" the words being used. GRMA!!

Faoi dheireadh! Tá áthas orm gur éirigh leat é a fheiscint. Tá ceann nua ann an tseachtain seo. Sin trí cinn anois.

At last! I'm happy you were able to see it. There is a new one there this week. That's three now.

I've created a 'helper' site, for learners to better follow what is going on on the videos. I have transcriptions for all three there:

http://philo-celtic-help.blogspot.com/

I intend to put out notes to help understand the podcasts, too - although not transcriptions or translations!
