I would like to get more into Irish music, I bought Ceol an Aifrinn le Seán Ó Riada le déanaí ach chuir sé sin díoma orm chun an fhírinne a rá ní rabih mé an-tugtha leis an ceol ón aifreann. I was thinking of getting Mise Éire but I don't want to risk wasting more money. Does anyone have any suggestions... Ó Riada is the only Irish composer that I know to be honest, only because I've heard about mar táim i mo chónaí i gCorcaigh!

'Maith agat

What are you looking for exactly?

Well, I don't know the music you mentioned. If it's traditional music than I can recommend the FIRST cds of 'Clannad' (that was my first contact with the irish music). Also, I liked Aoife by Aoife Ní Fhearraigh, and Ider an dá sholas by Maighread & Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill.

I'm not that familiar with composed music or sean-nós but I'm sure there are others who can help you,

best wishes.

Le meas,
Stefan

There is a huge compendium of Irish music called
O'Neill's Music of Ireland. Written by "Chief" O'Neill from Chicago. He was an Irish imigrant who became the Chief of Police in Chicago. He was also a fiddle player who, along with his brother began a project to collect traditional Irish tunes. Eventually, this was assembled and printed in what eventually became this book. It is considered a "must have" resource in the Irish fiddle circle's in the U.S. (Can't speak for Ireland's fiddle crowd).

Mel-Bay publications also has a superb book "The Complete Irish Fiddler" if you are interested in fiddle music.

If you are more interested in listening than in playing, I would recommend anything by Tommy Peoples for fiddle tunes. Anything by the Clancy Brothers for pub tunes and Darach O'Chaion (not sure of that spelling) has a wonderful sean nós CD available from Seannachai records.

Is minic a bhris beál duine a shrón.

Más ceol Éireannach a bhfuil blas "clasaiceach" air, bain triail as aon rud le Toirdhealbhach Ó Cearbhalláin - Turlough O'Carolan, a chum ceol don chláirseach sa 17-18ú haois. Agus rud eile, nua-aimseartha: The Brendan Voyage le Shaun Davey: full orchestra + uilleann pipes. Tá samplaí de ag:
