I have recently noticed this book online for between 9 - 14 dollars. I am already using Teach Yourself Irish. I was woundering if anyone has seen or used Teach Yourself Irish Grammar , and if so how user friendly is it? Or should i just get Buntús Cainte. Any isight would be helpful |

I got it for free in a second hand book store for free, when I got Ó Donaill's venerable olde dictionary for 20 euro. Maybe Buntus Cainte can eb got cheap too (only it will be missing the recordings) I think it is a good little series once one knows some grammar... |

I don't know the book but I do know the person who wrote it, Éamonn Ó Dónaill (not to be confused with the venerable lexicographer Niall Ó Dónaill) and I have a very high opinion of his ability to explain things to learners. It's probably going to be as user-friendly as grammar gets. Go buy it! :-) Is mise, Michal Boleslav Mechura

I've always been a big fan of Éamonn Ó Dónaill's courses but his Teach Yourself Irish Grammar falls a bit short in my view. It's set out as an exercise book and as result no good at all for reference purposes. 'Progress in Irish' works better as a course and 'Irish Grammar Book' by Nollaig Mac Congáil is more useful as a grammar book. Saying that, for 9-14 dollars - TYI grammar is a good buy Irrish grammar book http://www.irishbook.com/vIndex.htm?item3588.htm Progress in Irish http://www.litriocht.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=1063 |

"It's set out as an exercise book" That's what makes it a good book for the learner, in my opinion. It actually has you do something with the material, rather than reading through it and forgetting it five minutes later. For me, a technically oriented book (like a grammar book) without any sort of exercises or drills is quite worthless for a learner. Teach Yourself Irish Grammar comes from the point of view that you are just learning the grammar, not that you already know it and just need to look something up. As a writer, I have plenty of reference books on English grammar that I use all the time. I think they are great. However, if I were just learning English, I'm quite sure I would think them to be complete garbage. |
